I was very struck by the gesture made by Al-Hilal club star Neves, following the inappropriate behavior he faced from some fans, through discordant voices that carried insults unworthy of human morals and values, and that have no connection to the sportsmanship that should prevail in our stadiums and stands.
- We do not know if those voices truly belonged to the fans of Al-Taawoun who are exercising their legitimate right to support and cheer for their team, or if they were intruding voices in the stands that wanted to exploit the occasion to practice sports fanaticism in an unacceptable manner, with mentalities that have no place in our stadiums, in terms of ethics, religion, and humanity.
- As for Neves' gesture, I understood it as a calm and profound message, reminding those who insulted the late player that his friend has now returned to the mercy of God, and that what a person says and does does not go unnoticed; accountability ultimately lies with God. What is even more admirable is that Neves did not resort to responding in kind, nor did he engage in childish antics or offensive language, as we sometimes see from some players. Instead, he chose to maintain his respect for himself and the situation, making him deserving of respect and appreciation.
- Had this player succumbed to revenge or responded in an aggressive manner, the image might have changed, and he would not have received all this sympathy that he enjoyed. Therefore, the reaction was strong from various segments of our sports community, alongside a swift and rejecting official stance from the Saudi Football Federation and the league, as well as from Al-Taawoun club and Al-Hilal club company, through balanced statements that reflect a responsible position deserving of thanks and praise.
- Here, I specifically pause, as such official stances deserve appreciation not only for their content but also for the speed of their response. This is something I have previously called for on multiple occasions when addressing similar cases or instances that witnessed a deviation from the norm, even if they differed in the nature or degree of the act. I have always believed that delays in addressing such transgressions may give some the impression that the matter can pass, and that silence today may lead to a greater transgression tomorrow.
- However, the most important question remains: Does the current punishment achieve the necessary deterrence? In my opinion, fining the club or depriving its fans of attendance may be part of the systematic remedy, but it should not replace reaching the actual perpetrator of the violation. The problem is that the real offender may hide behind an individual or a group of fans, remaining unidentified, while the club bears the consequences of the violation and pays the price, at a time when the perpetrator knows that they will not personally bear the punishment.
- Therefore, I believe that this issue needs to be reconsidered; the club's responsibility is one thing, and the responsibility of the perpetrator of the violation is another.
I do not see that the club's responsibility should replace the responsibility of the person whose violation is proven. Rather, it is necessary to impose a personal penalty on the perpetrator, alongside what the system decides regarding the club, whenever evidence is available that enables the identification of their identity and proving their responsibility.
- In our present age, the identity of the fan is no longer necessarily unknown; the process of entering stadiums has become linked to electronic data and verification methods that can assist, when evidence is available, in identifying the perpetrator of the violation.
- In my humble opinion, some provisions of the system and its implementation mechanisms need to be reconsidered, in line with the technological advancement and the new phase that Saudi sports is experiencing.
- In general, we do not want stands without enthusiasm, nor fans without a voice, and we do not want stadiums to turn into silent places where fans fear expressing their joy and anger. What is required is for every fan to know that their right to cheer comes with the duty to respect others, and that those who exceed this right and turn to insults will not only cause the club to pay the price, but the offender themselves must bear the responsibility for what they have committed, once their violation is proven. Thus, the system gains real deterrent power, and justice is achieved that does not differentiate between a player and a fan, nor between one club and another.
- A final whisper:
Neves respected the system and dealt with the insult with his ethics... Will there come a day when the system will do justice to Neves and all those who face such transgressions, with the strength of the system and the fairness of its application?
