The most dangerous wars are not those that begin with gunfire, but those that are preceded by years of warnings that no one heeds, and alerts that are deemed exaggerations, and expansionist projects that are treated as political ambitions that can be contained, and terrorist militias that are embraced and considered national liberation movements.
This is what is happening today in our region, and it happened in Europe before World War II, when Hitler was reshaping Germany to become an expansionist military machine, while many viewed warnings of his danger as political hype that did not warrant confrontation.
There was a rogue state called Germany led by Hitler, just like Iran today, both possessed immense energies that they harnessed for military efforts instead of economic development, and both prioritized illegitimate ambitions over good neighborly relations, with both harboring excessive hatred towards their neighbors.
Germany empowered the "Gestapo" to be its fascist arm in its wars both inside and outside Germany, which closely resembles the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and just as Germany had supportive factions or even countries and organizations that did not see it as an imminent threat, there are those who defend or adopt the Iranian perspective and its terrorist arms from the Popular Mobilization Forces to the Houthis and finally Hezbollah.
In June 1940, European countries were falling one after another before the Nazi German army; British leader Churchill - who was out of office - had been warning early on about the danger of Hitler and his illegitimate ambitions, but no one in the world at that time listened to him, as they thought Churchill was exaggerating and that he was opposing the "liberation forces" represented by Hitler. However, what Churchill warned about became a bloody reality and a painful fact, with Europe on the verge of becoming mere provinces of the German Reich.
Something similar happened to Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon, which fell into the hands of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and just as Churchill resisted, Saudi Arabia was the only country warning of the Iranian threat and its arms in the region.
Britain was the last remaining stronghold, counting the days before the German army swept its shores, after Belgium fell and large parts of France were occupied. But Churchill, who became Prime Minister just days before the completion of the German occupation of France, stood before the British Parliament delivering one of the greatest speeches in history.
His speech was passionate, filled with courage, defiance, and resilience in the face of the looming German threat. Churchill knew that the speech alone was not enough, but he considered it his gateway to the minds and spirits of the people.
Churchill had just achieved a moral victory by evacuating around 300,000 British soldiers stranded in France across the English Channel after issuing a military order for all boats and civilian ships to head to the French shores and transport the army to English soil, which was one of the rare civilian operations, and Churchill described it as the "miracle of deliverance."
Churchill's speech was inspiring, managing to rally the British nation and revive its strength after it had been weakened by complacent, cowardly, or self-serving individuals whose only concern was to remain in their ministerial seats without confronting the imminent danger.
Winston Churchill had fought several battles before World War II, which were a prelude to his great victory, most of them against his opponents in the party and Parliament, as well as against those who tried to undermine the British body from within.
But the memory of the British and the entire world will never forget his speech delivered before the British Parliament in 1940, five years before Hitler's defeat, which was described at the time as the knife that tore apart the fear of Europeans from Germany.
Here are some highlights from his brilliant speech that received applause from members of Parliament from both the Conservative and Labour parties, waving handkerchiefs in admiration and support, in a rare British parliamentary tradition:
(Even if large parts of Europe fall, or many ancient and famous countries fall into the grip of the "Gestapo" and all the abhorrent Nazi ruling apparatus, we will not weaken or fail. We shall continue to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and increasing strength in the air, and we shall defend our island whatever the cost. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills.
We shall never surrender... And even if this island, or a large part of it, were to fall, which I do not believe for a moment, and its people were to be starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and protected by the British fleet, will carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and liberation of the old).
Between the "Iranian and German" experiences, the value of history, leadership, and resilience stands out, not merely as experiences stuck in the annals of politics, but as a measure through which the consequences of delaying in confronting dangers can be discovered, bringing us back to two men who recognized early what many did not: British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who did not content themselves with warning the world of two remarkably similar dangers, but led their "leadership" in their respective projects, each with different orientations, during two of the darkest and most complex moments in modern history.
