Modern technologies have imposed their presence on the details of daily life, and we now spend long hours in front of screens. Despite the unprecedented advancements and conveniences these technologies have brought, they have contributed to changing lifestyles and health habits, raising questions about their relationship with the increase in certain health problems associated with a lack of movement and excessive use of digital devices.
It cannot be said that technology alone has caused the rise in acquired diseases, but it has contributed to the emergence of behavioral patterns that may increase the risk of certain health issues. Prolonged sitting, decreased physical activity, disrupted sleep schedules, and the increasing reliance on services that reduce movement are all factors that can negatively affect public health and are associated with increased risks of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders.
Moreover, prolonged use of electronic devices can lead to eye strain, headaches, and neck and back pain, especially when sitting in improper positions and not taking regular breaks.
The effects do not stop at the physical aspect; they may extend to mental health, particularly when digital use turns into excessive behavior that affects sleep quality, concentration, and social interaction, or increases exposure to social comparisons and psychological pressures through digital platforms.
These challenges are particularly pronounced among children, who need movement, play, and direct interaction to support their physical, mental, and social development. Excessive screen time at the expense of sleep and physical activity may be linked to weight gain and sleep disorders, as well as a decline in opportunities for engaging in physical activities and real-life communication. Hence, the importance of guiding children towards a balanced use of technology emerges, without depriving them of its educational and cognitive benefits.
Addressing these challenges does not require abandoning technology but rather reorganizing our relationship with it. This can be achieved by increasing physical activity, reducing continuous sitting, taking regular breaks during device use, maintaining consistent sleep schedules, limiting screen use before bedtime, in addition to focusing on balanced nutrition and allocating time for social interaction and outdoor activities.
The problem lies not in the technology itself but in the way we use it. As the dominance of devices over the details of our lives increases, so does the need to restore balance between the digital world and the requirements of physical and mental health, so that technological advancement remains a means to improve the quality of life, rather than a factor contributing to its decline.
