When the first straw man in history was made, we discovered that the image created by imagination in the minds of sparrows can be more oppressive than reality. Fear does not always require a truth; it is enough for it to find a body, even if it is made of wood.
This is exactly what an image on a phone screen of a weapon or a bomb does; the tone of conversation suddenly changes, and distant possibilities become a heavy guest at people's tables.
No one can underestimate the danger of internationally banned weapons, nor can they treat their history as just a chapter in the passing wars. This weapon has left a deep wound in human memory, but acknowledging the danger is one thing, and turning it into a state of rampant panic is something entirely different. There is a wide gap between countries possessing these weapons and using them; these arsenals are governed by deterrence equations, profit and loss calculations, and communication channels that do not cease behind the scenes. This does not mean that the world is completely insulated from miscalculation, but it certainly means that discussions about major risks should not be separated from understanding the nature of international relations and strategic interests, away from the exaggeration practiced by crisis merchants.
In our Arab region, where crises are adjacent and social media spreads news faster than sometimes people's ability to verify it, awareness becomes an essential daily necessity. Not every military move is a precursor to a full-scale war, and not every political statement is an imminent declaration of conflict, nor is every image circulated on platforms definitive evidence of a catastrophic event. Sometimes, the mere act of reposting an unreliable news item, accompanied by a shocking and terrifying headline, is enough to disrupt the peace of an entire family and rob safe homes of comfort, simply because they are following the screens.
True reassurance does not mean closing our eyes to the world's tragedies or ignoring what is happening around us; rather, it means seeing things in their true size, not in the size of our inflated fears. Salvation lies in following official and credible sources, and in the ability to accurately distinguish between confirmed news, transient political analysis, and reckless predictions. When we realize this, we stop allowing unknown and imaginary accounts to become references for our psychological fates, and we restore to our minds their ability to remain calm and contemplative amidst the noise of this fast-paced world.
