The most intense articles I wrote were during the temporary publication period of the Kuwaiti newspaper "Al-Siyasa" from the city of Jeddah, during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. I was a young, impulsive man, and the newspaper was published without actual censorship. I attacked daily, without brakes or oversight, the leaders of the countries that stood with Saddam Hussein's regime. These bold and sharp writings found popularity among readers, especially in those circumstances filled with feelings of shock from the positions of what were called the opposing countries!
I remembered that phase of my life as a writer while following some heated discussions on the platform X (formerly Twitter), where unrestrained users write without oversight and publish without barriers, and an audience thirsty for entertainment. However, the similarities are different; impulsiveness and intensity are traits of youth, while one gains an increasing amount of wisdom and deliberation with age. Yet what we find today on social media platforms is a mix of some young people's recklessness with older individuals competing in intensity, insults, and bullying, as if the journalistic censor previously represented a barrier!
Today, there is no barrier on social media platforms except for self-censorship and the law, which holds accountable and deters. However, outsmarting the law is easy, and the law sometimes stands helpless in the face of the coding that allows the writer's arrows to reach their targets without putting them in a position of accountability!
Today, self-censorship remains the bet in curbing excesses and insults. Here arises the need to develop personal awareness of the truth of opinion and the standards of expressing it, and that social media platforms are means of dialogue that reflect the character of the interlocutors, no matter how great the difference in opinion. The goal of any dialogue is to clarify a point of view and attempt to persuade, not to exchange insults!
When Kuwait was liberated, the conditions of publication returned to normal, and the brakes of censorship returned. I collected the articles from that period and presented them for publication in a book, but the ministry's censor stopped at several articles, requesting their removal, a request I met with stubbornness. Between the insistence of the censor and the stubbornness of the writer, the book was not published, which I thanked God for after years, and I owe my gratitude to the regulatory official at that time. If I could turn back time, I would not have written with such intensity, nor would I have thought of collecting the articles in a book that would stand as a witness to the impulsiveness of a young man who found an opportunity to publish without "brakes"!
In short.. every word a person writes is a reflection of their cultural level and the truth of their morals, and it is a testimony against them in this world and the hereafter!
