Al-Ahly lost by six, a heavy defeat against a club that has always witnessed fluctuations in their matches and exchanged statements.
Was this loss surprising?
Is it the reason for the anger of Al-Ahly's fans?
Is it the problem, to begin with?
No, and a thousand no!
I liken it to the final bullet that ended the last remnants of hope in reaching a mirage that some optimists thought was water.
Al-Ahly lost to Al-Shabab, but it was defeated since the beginning of the season, and there is a vast difference between loss and defeat!
The story did not start with six goals, but with decisions that undermined the stability of a team that had enough to continue its successes. The departure of its coach and team leaders in this manner, and at the same time, was not just an administrative and technical change, but a moral defeat whose effects extended to bringing in an obscure coach, a tender professional, a hemorrhage of points in the league, losing the continental cup, culminating in a six-goal defeat by Al-Shabab.
What happened to Al-Ahly, whatever its causes and motivations, is unforgivable. The worst part of the loss is that those who created its causes may leave without paying the price, while those who had no say or voice in those decisions remain.
The two presidents have left, the coach and foreign professionals will leave, but that fan will remain, who prepares his enthusiasm before he sleeps, sets his alarm clock, and wakes up every two hours out of his eagerness to meet Al-Ahly.
That fan who writes after a victory: “When Al-Ahly wins, the earth sleeps happily.”
Who upset this fan? Who caused his distress? And who upset his land on the night of the match against Al-Shabab, and in the nights that preceded it?
Those who made those decisions did not take all of this into account!
There is no longer talk of an exceptional season, nor even about achieving the ambitions with which Al-Ahly entered its season, but rather about saving what can be saved, and protecting what remains of gains that have become threatened with loss.
If Al-Ahly leaves this season with a cup, while retaining some of its foreign and local players, I will consider it an achievement! Not because this is the ceiling of Al-Ahly's ambition, but because those who brought it to this state have made preserving the gains an achievement, after it was a legitimate right to compete for championships.
After the end of yesterday's match, I found myself repeating exquisite verses by Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi, depicting the state of Al-Ahly and its fans:
Fate has struck me with calamities until
My heart is in a sheath of arrows
So if arrows strike me
The blades break upon the blades
