Two days ago, Princess Reema bint Bandar wrote a comprehensive article in the New York Times titled "There Are No Limits to What the Houthis Will Do." She began with a human story from the incident of the attack on Riyadh Airport on October 10, then addressed several aspects that represent the severe danger of this terrorist militia if it continues to extend its control over Yemen, targeting its neighbors and threatening the security of international navigation in Bab al-Mandab. She also highlighted the double standards of the international community by comparing the world's attention to a single missile showcased by ISIS in Raqqa in 2014, which prompted the world to form an international coalition to combat it, while now we face a terrorist army that manufactures its own missiles, exports its expertise, and resorts to artificial intelligence to increase the accuracy of its strikes. However, the world does not deal with it with the seriousness required, which calls for the international community to set a clear objective: to end the existence of the Houthis as an armed terrorist force.
In this article, Princess Reema is exercising one of her most important responsibilities as an ambassador, which is addressing the world and particularly the American community through a widely circulated media outlet, in a manner that suits its culture of reception and understanding of issues. She presents the true narrative of the Houthi militia and the crisis it has caused both within and outside the borders of Yemen, and she confronts many narratives that have appeared in the same newspaper and in other well-known American newspapers and media outlets, which are inaccurate, focusing on one aspect of the story while neglecting other more important aspects, some of which involve intentional selectivity that mixes truth and falsehood, in addition to articles and reports that discuss the Kingdom and its positions and dealings with the crisis in a misleading and untrustworthy manner, both professionally and ethically.
What I want to clarify from this article is that the role of an ambassador is not limited to diplomatic work within the halls of official bodies, especially during exceptional circumstances. Rather, as a representative of their country, they must adopt their state's positions and explain them through influential media, and engage with policymakers, public opinion trends, and cultural and intellectual elites. This duty is a fundamental obligation that every ambassador must fulfill, performing it in the best possible manner through their presence, communication, and relationships in the country they represent us in. This duty can be described as more and more important than merely exercising soft power, especially in such circumstances that require employing all capabilities and skills of Saudi diplomacy in its broad and comprehensive sense.
Therefore, we would like to see our ambassadors in every country around the world stepping out of the confines of traditional routine and the monotonous work within their offices, to play a vital and impactful role in the communities of the countries they work in. We do not want Princess Reema bint Bandar to be the only exception to the stereotypical image of an ambassador; rather, we want all of them to rise to the level of responsibility that diplomatic work requires in all its implications and aspects, especially at this particular stage.
