The number of screens in front of humans is continuously increasing, bombarding them with targeted information. So, where are we heading?
We are not heading towards more information; we are heading towards more guidance.
Once, there was only one screen in the house, the television, which had a time to turn off. Today, you are surrounded by 5 screens at the same moment: your phone, your car, your work, your watch, your glasses, your ring, the supermarket, and even the elevator. The problem is not the abundance of screens; the problem lies in three dangerous transformations:
1. From information you seek, to information that seeks you.
Before, you would go to the information. Today, algorithms study your fears, boredom, and anger, and send you the information that keeps you glued. We are not consumers of information; we are its fuel.
2. From a window to the world, to a mirror of yourself.
Each screen gives you what confirms what you already believe. Screens do not expand your vision; they trap each person in a bubble. That’s why we see the same event, and each person understands it in a completely opposite way.
3. From free time, to no free time.
Before, the mind would get bored and think, reflect, memorize, and invent. Now, any second of boredom is covered by a screen. We have killed the space where awareness was born.
Where are we heading?
Most likely, we are heading towards one of two paths:
The majority path: a distracted person, whose memory is external in their phone, with a focus that doesn’t exceed eight seconds, easily guided, who thinks they know everything while they don’t even know themselves. They consume more content and produce less understanding.
And the minority path: a person learning digital fasting. They choose when to open the screen and why. They turn the screen from a master into a servant.
The golden rule today is not "know more," but rather, those who do not control their inputs will have others control their outputs.
The solution is not to break the screens. The solution is to set limits for them like any dangerous tool:
One screen at a time, screen-free time before bed and for an hour after waking, do not open the screen when you are in an emotionally disturbed state such as anger, anxiety, or loneliness.
And the real question remains not how many screens are in front of you, but: Are you the one using the screen, or is the screen the one using you?
