The moon disappears, and we live the sleepless nights and the groans of pain in the nights of separation. Where have we remained, and where has she gone? Look where she took us.
And see where she left us.
We carry the channel of memory within our souls, bringing to us what time has failed to erase.
Through it pass the old faces, the distant voices, the scent of the first homes, the laughter of youth, and the footsteps of those who once filled the place with life and then left, leaving their places hanging in the heart as if waiting for their return.
From the channel of memory, our past lives look back at us; we see ourselves as children, running in the yards of the houses, sleeping on their roofs, watching the stars and the contours of the moon. We ride the saddle of our childhood dreams, hearing distant voices, curling up inside a mosquito net set up by my mother to protect her little ones from the bites of mosquitoes and the insects of the night.
We would argue over small things and then reconcile quickly, laughing from the depths of our hearts without asking ourselves about tomorrow.
The house back then was smaller than our dreams, but it was larger than the whole world because those we loved were gathered under its roof.
Time passed quickly, and we grew up before we realized we were living our best days. We rushed to grow up, thinking of freedom as an independent house, money, and decisions that no one else shared with us.
No one told us that growing up has a price, and that one of its heaviest bills is the separation of those who made the house a warm little homeland.
The loved ones dispersed; the father left, that pillar who gave the house its balance and dignity, preceded by the grandmother with her safe embrace and delightful stories. The mother faded or was weighed down by the years, we lost a brother who was our support and assistance, and his image remained in a corner of the house, while our prayers followed him to the sky.
A person dies, but their voice does not die; it remains despite the departure. You pass by an old room and hear a distant laugh deep within you. Your eyes may fall on a chair that someone used to sit on, and you feel that the place still holds something of them.
Some houses are not just empty of their inhabitants; they are devoid of souls that gave their walls meaning.
The house remains standing, but its spirit departs with those who have gone, remembering the oblivion of hugs and the murmuring of lips in prayer and the murmurs of hearts with sobs of farewell.
How harsh it is for the house that once felt cramped with its many inhabitants to become so wide that it aches!
The family gathering did not require an invitation or an appointment.
Food was placed on one table, hands reached for a single dish, laughter intertwined, and voices rose, but no one thought that this beautiful chaos would one day become one of the most precious memories of life.
The children dispersed, each on their path in search of a livelihood; one got married and had a house and children, another departed from this world, leaving behind only a picture, a prayer, and memories that do not age.
We realize the value of the souls that were in our lives only after we lose the ability to bring them back.
The voice of the mother, the question of the father, were not fleeting things; they were a summary of the meaning of the whole family.
The quarrels of siblings and our bickering were not enmity; they were a form of intimacy, because those who argue under one roof always have a chance to return.
Today, distances have grown, responsibilities have increased, and visits require a vacation, meetings need an appointment, and hugs need an occasion...
This is the painful paradox in the journey of life; we search long for happiness, only to discover that it was sitting with us at one table, sleeping in the adjacent room, calling us from the end of the corridor, and knocking on our door without permission.
Life was simpler, hearts were closer, joy was less costly, laughter was more spontaneous, and people knew each other not through a screen, but through the familiarity of days, the warmth of gatherings, and the talk of intimacy and memories...
Staring into the channel of memory is a renewed spiritual pain.
Every old picture can be a door to a cherished sadness, every old scent can bring back to us a whole era, and every absent name can awaken in the heart a room that has been closed for years...
Yet, memory remains the last witness that we lived, loved, adored, laughed, and clung to people who left an imprint on our souls that death cannot erase.
Oh generation of today, do not postpone love; sit with your father, listen more to your mother's voice, embrace your siblings, maintain your family ties, ask about an absent friend, and seize the meeting before presence turns into memory.
Do not wait for a holiday or an occasion, for life does not grant us a receipt that guarantees anyone's permanence.
There will come a day when we open the channel of memory and find before us only absent faces, distant voices, and houses whose features have changed.
On that day, we will not wish for more money, a bigger house, or a farther journey; we will ask for one wish, impossible yet simple, which is for that old hour to return as it was.
The channel of memory will continue to bring us what we have lost, and it will pain us with what we loved, reminding us of an inescapable truth.
Some days we lived were the most precious days of our lives, and those who passed by us as transients were life itself.
And the moon was right:
Your voice calls me to remember, the little dream
And a wall of clay and mat
You came from forgetfulness and from all time
That which has passed and that which has changed
We parted yesterday, remember.
