It happens that the confrontation of the self with itself intensifies in the battlefield of the body between feelings resulting from immediate reactions to offenses and a memory rich with imprints clad in the garment of mutual kindness. It is certain that the response to counterattacks varies in size, speed, and effectiveness, depending on the stimulus. It is difficult for someone from his homeland to soothe his conscience and stand numb between a raging emotion and a loose logic of possibilities.
I believe, and some suspicion is not a sin, that the majority of Saudis have strong relationships, deep-rooted friendships, and humanitarian stances with our Yemeni brothers, even at an emotional level that sympathizes with a people who have shared with us for decades in building our homeland. We used to think that we had no relatives or Arab neighbors except for (the people of Ahmed), as our forms, dialects, and customs are very similar, if not identical; given that tribal construction establishes behavioral discipline and elevates the status of honor and manliness, refining behaviors or governing them, even if by force; for shame is shame from the south of Yemen to the north of the kingdom.
No Yemeni (a person of dignity) denies or disavows the role of the kingdom economically in the lives of Yemenis, and they testify with their tongues and hearts, and neighbors to each other (the neighbor of kin and the neighbor next door), and (there is no faith for one who does not feel safe from his neighbor's harm); perhaps the harshest decision that turned the financial equations of brothers was made by the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh by siding with President Saddam Hussein during his invasion of our dear neighbor Kuwait; due to the sketch drawn at night, and the rush of fools in the morning to implement it without awareness of the consequences that cannot be avoided; which revealed their political flaws; and cost the peoples the price of the bravado of leaders who have nothing of leadership but their name. News of the (experts) we were accustomed to ceased; as on a personal level; I became aware of life; and the Yemeni brother was present in our villages, cities, farms, and pastures. He is the builder, the farmer, the shepherd, the worker, the merchant, then the contractor, then the trusted supplier of goods, and the successful partner; and soon (Abu Yemen) became part of our social fabric; he is the most closely attached newcomer to our customs and traditions; he respects and venerates social norms; and religious morals; he contributes to weddings, provides for the deceased; and attends funerals as if he were one of the villagers. After they return to their country, they roam the markets to shop, for the Yemeni is generous with himself and his family, and you see their cars crossing the borders swaying with carefully and neatly stacked loads and belongings, then they come back; and we smell the aroma of Khawlani coffee in the homes and pathways; and we enjoy nibbling on Raziqi raisins.
It is true that peoples have a tendency to yield to political propaganda, even adopting it, even if they are ignorant of its repercussions and consequences; and it is unfortunate that some do not learn from experiences, nor accumulate knowledge to avoid repeating the same mistakes. The modern history of Yemen documents the kingdom's stance on Nasserism; which exported its nationalism by the force of arms, pushing the safe and busy people working for their daily bread to revolution and take up arms against a national component; whether we accepted it or rejected it; and it is not necessarily that military rule is a factor of stability, nor a guarantor of prosperity, as the brother barely awakens from the shocks of the past, until this time he is besieged by an ideology belonging to a mined space and poisoned air, and (Abu Yemen) returns again to suffer the burdens of speeches that trade in land and sky, and adopts an identity that is not his; and a methodology that contradicts the principles of his creed; and war merchants invest in the blood of the people; which raises the question; what kind of misery is this that every two or three decades brings a noble people back to the square of crises?
Perhaps we felt a significant difference between brothers and sons of friendly countries who came to work in our land and seek sources of livelihood after we left Abu Yemen in the nineties, yet we noticed the difference, as every employer who dealt with another nationality often repeated (may God water the time of Abu Yemen) because he is a labor force of honesty, quality, and the brotherhood of living and salt is sacred. And perhaps our neighbors do not deny that they shared with us the journey of hardship and prosperity, and they will not forget the camaraderie and brotherhood between us.
And perhaps we never imagined nor do we wish for the day when shells are fired and marches are directed from dear neighbors towards the land of the Two Holy Mosques, and it is not a matter of favor on the grace that the Quran forbids forgetting (and do not forget the favor between you), but rather a denunciation and condemnation, against a segment that hardly represents one-tenth of Yemenis; and they are victims of politicization and ideologization; which does wonders; and the conspiracy is no longer a theory we believe in or disbelieve; but has become shameless; flaunting and showcasing its baseness almost naked; and sticking out its tongue in contempt of an Arab awareness that has suffered from its leadership and actions; and has burned in hell yet has not matured; and here I have long been reminiscing about our partner in the shop (Naji) and his brother (Mohammed) and sending him a message of peace asking him (where are you, Jinni) as he used to say when he felt I was late; and because he loves folk poetry, I conclude my message with a poem (And he says to me, the son of Zayed; O my homeland, my beloved; a cup that quenches you is of no use, as long as the nights are dry).
