A whole year since your departure, and I am still learning that absence does not mean that those we love leave completely. Their presence only changes form; from a voice we hear to a meaning that resides within us, and from a hand we touch to an impact we see in the details of our lives and in the faces of those who loved.
In Jeddah, I met little "Noura," my brother Sultan's daughter who was born after her passing - may God have mercy on her - and I contemplated her for a long time. There was something of you in her features beyond the matching name; that gentle gaze, and the calmness that brings back to my memory your pure face, and small details that cannot be explained in words. At that moment, I realized that life sometimes gives us its own signals to tell us that the greatest things we possess and those we love will always remain with us in a permanent way.
As I saw her, I felt that death, despite its harshness, does not have the final word. In the moment when the dearest of those we loved disappears, a life inspired by that great spirit begins to manifest in a granddaughter who carries her grandmother's features, and those values that you instilled in us over the years I see after many years have become behaviors, success, and love that unites the whole family.
After a year of absence that is more like a constant presence, the question is no longer: how much do I miss you, but rather about the magnitude of the great legacy you left us from which we draw brightness for our lives.
I realized that true loyalty to those we love is not to remain prisoners of sadness, but to live in a way that would have made you happy; for your sons and daughters to be strong, successful, outstanding, loving to one another and to their homeland, and for your grandchildren to grow up carrying something of your values before your features.
Perhaps this is one of the secrets of life: that a person does not disappear when they leave, but rather what they have sown over the days remains through words that offered hope, morals that bequeathed love that encompasses everyone, and the unending prayers that Paradise is your resting place.
Oh my mother, a year has passed, and the sadness has not faded, but it has turned into gratitude.. and when I saw Noura, I felt for a moment that you were very close.
You departed, but something of you is still being born among us every day.
