In a study conducted by Taibah University and published in the peer-reviewed journal "Frontiers in Public Health," 62.3% of 835 participating Saudi mothers rejected the idea of establishing milk banks for mothers. The most prominent factor in the rejection was concerns related to breastfeeding proximity, but the rejection rate decreased when there was information available about the donors and beneficiaries!
The goal of establishing milk banks for mothers is to provide breast milk for newborns, especially premature infants. The results of the study, published by "Okaz" yesterday in detail, reflect the social and religious impact on shaping opinions and making decisions. Although addressing the reasons for rejection by recording the data of donors and beneficiaries seems logical from a professional standpoint in establishing and operating these banks, considering social and religious concerns regarding breastfeeding appears necessary, especially with the prevailing opinion among scholars that there is no difference between breastfeeding directly from the breast or consuming milk obtained through intermediary means!
There is no doubt that the need for the existence of milk banks for mothers seems urgent, given the importance of providing natural breast milk for newborns and premature infants in need of it. Moreover, having reliable data registration procedures that instill trust in the community members is likely to reduce the rate of objections to the existence of these banks and to donating to or benefiting from them. The health impact of providing mothers' milk for infants is extremely important!
In summary, addressing the social concerns that drive rejection always contributes to helping the community accept anything that is unfamiliar or new!
