The science of history represents the memory and identity of nations, through which the image of the past is formed, the transformations of the present are understood, and the features of the future are anticipated. However, contemporary historical writing faces multiple challenges related to sources of knowledge, the methodologies employed, and the intellectual formation of researchers. Despite the presence of modern and contemporary history in universities, historians are still often absent from the analysis of current events in favor of specialists in media and political science, which raises a fundamental question: Why has the presence of historians in the contemporary scene diminished? Is this due to the nature of the specialization or the way events are approached and historical knowledge is produced?
From here, the importance of distinguishing between the contemporary historian of events, the researcher in history, and the political or media analyst emerges; each has its own tools and methodologies, yet the need remains for a historian-researcher capable of combining documentation, analysis, and critique.
Ibn Khaldun provides a prominent model of the elite historian; he did not merely record events but sought to interpret them and uncover their causes and social, political, economic, and even religious contexts, proposing concepts and theories that some of their counterparts in Western thought did not gain recognition until a long time later.
From this, it should be noted that the elite historian requires a comprehensive system of scientific and intellectual traits, foremost among them: a broad culture, critical awareness, scientific courage, intellectual independence, credibility, objectivity, and the ability to analyze sources and compare narratives despite their differences. He also needs self-awareness to know when to rely on evidence and when his personal intervention may influence the historical event. This distance between the self and the evidence represents one of the most important conditions for rigorous historical writing.
In this context, we need specialized institutions and centers in historical sciences that treat history as an integrative science where politics, sociology, economics, religion, archaeology, culture, customs, traditions, and other sciences intersect; for history is the identity and memory of the nation, and reading it with intellectual and critical awareness is essential to understanding who we are, what we were, and where we are headed.
In summary, we do not want to wait for our demise for the value of our works and ideas to be discovered, as happened with Ibn Khaldun; his introduction, which is originally part of his book "The Prolegomena and the Book of Events and News," remained distant from historical studies, and its scientific and intellectual status did not become clear on a wide scale until after his death. Therefore, we believe that it is the right of historians and researchers for their efforts to receive reading, appreciation, and scientific critique during their lifetime, rather than having their impact discovered and their production celebrated after their departure.
