Through the decades I have lived and witnessed their events, and from what I have read and heard about the decades that preceded me since King Abdulaziz - may God have mercy on him - unified the fragments of this land, a conviction has taken root within me that is no longer just a fleeting impression, but a truth confirmed by the days time and again: that this homeland, whenever someone intends it harm, emerges from the ordeal stronger, and whenever its adversaries think that a certain circumstance can divide its people, they become more cohesive and united around their homeland and leadership.
Perhaps this is one of the most deserving characteristics of the Saudi experience to reflect upon.
Homelands are not defined only in times of prosperity, nor is their strength measured solely by the wealth or size or capabilities they possess, but rather their true essence is revealed when they face danger, when crises intensify around them, and when the loyalty of their people and their ability to hold together is tested.
And here was the Kingdom, throughout its modern history, providing the same answer in almost every test: we differ in details, we vary in opinions, our regions, dialects, and interests are diverse, but when it comes to the homeland, the homeland becomes the word that nothing surpasses.
The story began with unification
When we look at the Kingdom today, it may seem to the new generations that the existence of a state of such vastness and stability is a natural thing, but returning to the time before unification reveals the magnitude of the historical achievement that was realized.
This land was vast expanses, with regions, tribes, and towns separated by distances, conflicts, and harsh conditions. Then came King Abdulaziz's project, which was not just a project of merging land into land, but was before and after that a project of nation-building.
There is a huge difference between gathering geography and uniting people.
Geography can be annexed by force, but homelands do not endure by force alone. They endure when belonging to them transforms into a deep-rooted feeling in the souls, and when a citizen in the north of the country, the south, the east, the west, and the center feels that what affects a part of the homeland affects him personally. And this is what the decades have created.
The regions transformed into a homeland, and the tribes, families, and local communities transformed into a people united by one state, one destiny, and one flag.
Therefore, the greatest achievement since unification is not the roads, cities, oil, factories, or universities, despite their greatness, but the construction of the Saudi national identity that has, over time, become stronger than attempts to penetrate or tamper with it.
They tried from many doors
The Kingdom has gone through many stormy circumstances throughout its modern history.
Systems in the region changed, wars ignited, and ideologies emerged that claimed they would reshape the entire region. Economic, political, and security crises came, waves of terrorism and extremism emerged, and the region was engulfed in Gulf wars, then the world entered an era of media chaos, psychological warfare, rumors, and social media platforms.
The tools changed, but the goal at some stages remained the same: to undermine the trust between the citizen and his homeland.
Once in the name of politics, once in the name of religion, once in the name of tribe or region, once through economics, once through a rumor, and once through media rhetoric wishing to see the natural differences within society turn into a national rift.
But what many who bet on this did not understand is that Saudi society has accumulated through its generations a shared national memory. A memory that tells it that its security did not come by coincidence. That its unity was not an easy gift. That the stability it enjoys was built over generations. And that the homeland, no matter the observations on any of its affairs, is greater than the observation, more enduring than the crisis, and more important than the disagreement.
In hardships, the true essence emerges
I personally lived through many stages of our modern history, and I witnessed how people's language changes when they feel their homeland is targeted.
A Saudi may disagree with another Saudi over a social issue, an economic decision, a football match, or a cultural or media matter, and the intensity of the discussion between them may rise, but there is a deep, unwritten line that everyone knows: the homeland is not a matter for bargaining. And these are not slogans for occasions as some may imagine. They become clear in times of adversity.
When the homeland is exposed to external danger, small disagreements recede to the background.
And when terrorism tries to strike the community, the terrorist discovers that the blood he wanted to use as a reason for division has become a reason for greater cohesion.
And when campaigns of defamation are launched, the result is often the opposite, because the citizen who may criticize an internal issue with his tongue is the same one who stands defending his homeland when he feels that the criticism has turned into targeting.
And this is an equation that those who look at societies from the outside do not understand.
True belonging does not mean seeing everything as perfect, but knowing the difference between fixing your house and allowing others to demolish it.
A homeland not afraid of development
One of the secrets of Saudi strength is that it has not made the preservation of constants an excuse for stagnation.
The Kingdom we knew fifty years ago is not the Kingdom we see today in the details of life, economy, education, culture, technology, the role of women, the aspirations of youth, the scale of projects, and openness to the world. Yet, amid this tremendous transformation, it remains the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Here lies the difficult equation:
To change without losing yourself, to develop without abandoning your roots, and to move far into the future while knowing where you came from.
This is what makes the transformations that the Kingdom is experiencing today more than just economic and developmental projects; it is a new phase of building the Saudi human being and redefining what is possible before him.
The generation of fathers built and preserved.
The generation of children developed and expanded.
The youth of today are asked to compete with the world.
Thus, the homeland becomes a continuous project across generations, not starting with one generation nor ending with its departure.
The repeated mistake in reading Saudi Arabia
Many who tried to read the Kingdom from the outside fell into a fundamental error: they read it as a country rich only in oil. Oil is important, but it does not explain everything.
If wealth alone could create the stability of nations, rich countries would not fall, and societies possessing more resources than they need would not disintegrate.
The true strength of the Kingdom is deeper than a barrel of oil.
It lies in a historical legitimacy that has accumulated, institutions that have developed, leadership that understands the nature of its society, and a people who have discovered through experience the value of their homeland.
And there is another factor that is no less important: the collective awareness of what is happening around us.
Over the past decades, Saudis have witnessed countries that were safe turn into arenas of conflict, bustling cities become ruins, and peoples pay heavy prices when the state collapsed or its prestige weakened.
And those who see the fire in others' homes know better the value of the roof that protects them.
Thus, the concept of the state has become more entrenched in the Saudi consciousness, and security for them is no longer just the presence of a security man on the street, but a complete system that begins with the unity of the homeland and ends with the stability of daily human life.
Even terrorism failed
Terrorism may have been one of the harshest tests that Saudi society has gone through.
The bet was that the extremist would succeed in creating a clash within society, making blood a path to chaos, and shaking people's trust in the security of their homeland.
But it failed.
A painful price was paid, security men and innocent citizens were lost, and the country lived through harsh moments, but the state faced it, the community became aware, and the ideology that was hiding behind false slogans was exposed.
And most importantly, the experience made society more resilient.
This is a recurring trait in Saudi history:
We emerge from the crisis knowing more about it and about ourselves than we did before it.
The ordeal that does not break the homeland grants it immunity against a similar ordeal in the future.
From the rifle to the phone
But the challenges have changed.
No longer does anyone who wants to harm the homeland need a weapon.
Sometimes, a mobile phone, an anonymous account, a false piece of information, and a cropped image are enough.
The modern war can start with a rumor.
An economic news item is exaggerated.
An individual incident is presented as a national phenomenon.
A mistake by an official is turned into an accusation against the entire state.
A social difference is pushed until it becomes a feud between segments of society.
And here, the awareness of the citizen has become part of national security.
Defending the homeland is no longer limited to borders; there are other boundaries within the mind and consciousness.
And one of the most dangerous things that can happen to any society is to allow others to define how it sees itself.
Therefore, the aware Saudi does not reject criticism; rather, he needs it, but he distinguishes between criticism that aims to improve the homeland and rhetoric that wishes for its collapse.
The first says: here is a mistake that needs to be corrected.
The second says: everything is wrong.
And between the two phrases lies a complete homeland.
A secret that opponents do not see
Perhaps someone may ask: why do bets on the disintegration of Saudi Arabia fail?
Because there is something that is difficult to measure in numbers.
It is that feeling that resides in a person towards his homeland.
The homeland for the Saudi is not a map hanging on a wall, nor a national anthem he recites on an occasion, nor a passport he carries.
It is his father's house.
And his mother's memories.
And his first school.
And the mosque of his neighborhood.
And the street where he met his childhood friends.
And the grave of a loved one he buried in its soil.
And the future of his children whom he wants to live in safely.
When the homeland reaches this deep area of the soul, it becomes much harder to tamper with it than what those who observe from afar imagine.
The leadership and the people.. a relationship forged by circumstances
It is fair when reading Saudi history not to separate between the strength of the state and the people's rallying around its leadership.
The relationship between leadership and the citizen was not formed in a day, but rather built over decades of positions and experiences.
From the founding King Abdulaziz, through his sons the kings who each bore the responsibility of the homeland at different stages, to the era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and his Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the state has continued to change and develop while its essence remains: a state that knows that the human being is its goal, and a people who know that the state is the umbrella of their security and unity.
There may be mistakes, for states are human endeavors, and no human experience is without mistakes, but the strength of states lies not in claiming perfection, but in their ability to review, correct, develop, and continue.
The Kingdom has proven that it possesses this ability.
What have I learned from the decades I have lived?
After all these years, I cannot view events as separate news items.
The years grant a person something that reading newspapers alone does not give: a perspective of time.
The event that seems enormous in its moment is later placed in its true size by the years.
How many crises were said to change everything and then passed!
And how many threats were said to be the most dangerous and then the homeland surpassed them!
And how many rumors filled the gatherings and then became something no one remembers after years!
And how many times did some imagine that the Kingdom stood at a crossroads it could not surpass, then it surpassed it and began a phase greater than the previous one!
Therefore, I have learned not to judge the strength of the homeland by the noise of the moment.
Ancient homelands are not measured by the sound of the storm, but by their ability to endure after the storm calms.
And Saudi Arabia has endured.
In fact, in many instances, it did not settle for endurance; it advanced.
The ordeal they wanted to create division became a bond.
And this, in my opinion, is the most beautiful paradox of our national history.
Those who wanted to frighten us made us more aware of the value of our security.
And those who wanted to divide us reminded us of the value of our unity.
And those who tried to distort our homeland pushed us to recognize its achievements more.
And those who bet on the distance between leadership and the people discovered in difficult moments that the distance narrows.
And those who bet on the differences between regions found everyone under one flag.
And those who tried to play on generations discovered that the son may differ from his father in lifestyle, but he meets him at the homeland.
Thus, many of the ordeals turned into lessons in citizenship.
But love alone is not enough
And love for the homeland should not turn into mere emotion.
True patriotism is responsibility.
To work sincerely is patriotism.
To preserve public money is patriotism.
To reject corruption is patriotism.
To master your work is patriotism.
To teach your children to respect the system is patriotism.
To disagree politely is patriotism.
To criticize for the sake of reform is patriotism.
To verify before spreading a rumor is patriotism.
And to know that the reputation of your country is part of your responsibility when you are outside it is patriotism.
For great homelands are not made by leaders alone, nor by citizens alone, but by the moral partnership between leadership that bears its responsibility and a people that bears its responsibility.
The homeland of the future
And today, as we see the Kingdom undergoing one of the largest transformation phases in its history, the responsibility of preserving this legacy becomes greater.
Giant projects are important.
Diversifying the economy is important.
Technology, artificial intelligence, tourism, industry, culture, and sports are important.
But the greatest Saudi project will always remain:
The Saudi human being.
To be educated, aware, productive, and confident in his identity, open to the world without losing himself in it, proud of his history without living as a prisoner of the past, capable of criticism without destruction, of disagreement without enmity, and of ambition without forgetting his homeland.
This human being is the first line of defense for the Kingdom, and he is also its primary tool in shaping the future.
And I say it as a testimony of a lifetime:
I do not write these words from the thrill of a fleeting moment, nor from the enthusiasm of a national occasion.
I write them from the accumulation of decades I have lived some of, read about some, and heard details of some from those who preceded us.
I have seen events that troubled people.
And I have heard pessimistic predictions.
And I have lived through crises that were said at the time to be exceptional.
Then I saw the homeland overcome them.
Time and again.
Until I became convinced to say it with assurance:
This homeland has a remarkable ability to turn challenge into strength, fear into awareness, and hardship into unity.
Therefore, those who wished ill for Saudi Arabia throughout its history not only failed to achieve what they wanted; they contributed, unwittingly, to reminding Saudis of what unites them.
Every crisis revealed a true essence.
And every danger awakened a belonging.
And every targeting rearranged priorities.
As if the homeland says every time it goes through a test:
I do not weaken in hardships... I discover in hardships the strength of my children.
This land was built on unity after division, on security after fear, and generations have succeeded one another adding a brick to the construction.
Thus, preserving it is not the responsibility of a particular generation.
It is a trust passed down through generations.
We inherited a homeland built by our fathers, and we must hand it over to our children stronger, more prosperous, and safer.
And those who come after us will read the history of this phase as we read today the history of those who preceded us.
And they will discover the same truth:
That the Kingdom has gone through many storms, but it was never a leaf in the wind.
It was a tree with deep roots.
The wind shakes its branches, but it does not uproot it.
Perhaps its entire secret lies in those roots:
Leadership and people, land and history, creed and identity, memory and shared destiny.
And so, the stronger the storm, the more the roots cling to the ground.
And the more someone thinks that hardship will divide us, the more it unites us.
And the more someone bets on our weakness, the more he discovers late that the strength of Saudi Arabia has never been in what it possesses alone...
But in who belongs to it.
