The Arab region is going through the most sensitive phase in its modern history; where regional calculations intersect and the intensity of armed provocations led by Iranian militias escalates in a tense scene where Iraq stands on the front line, caught between a relentless pursuit to regain its natural place in the Arab sphere and desperate attempts by Iranian-affiliated militias to use it as a launchpad for military operations and regional calculations through aggressive behaviors that have affected neighboring countries and primarily harmed Iraq's sovereignty and the security of its people. Every missile launched outside the state's authority and every drone that crosses the borders does not only target a specific country but also strikes at the very core of Iraq's dignity, putting its relationships with its Arab surroundings to tests it does not deserve.
In response to these repeated aggressions against the Gulf states and the Kingdom of Jordan, the wisdom of the leadership in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been evident, as it has met the actions of these unruly groups with the highest levels of restraint, stemming from a deep understanding of the dangers of slipping into confrontations that would disrupt the stability of the region and drag it into pitfalls that widen the chasm of danger and open more fronts and fires. However, this Saudi patience has only been a space granted for diplomatic solutions and disciplined dialogue to control the scene, coupled with strict and clear warnings that the security and stability of the Gulf is a red line that cannot be compromised, and that responding to any transgression has become an inevitable necessity.
On the other hand - the official Iraqi side - these militia practices were neither accepted nor overlooked; the position of the official leadership, headed by President Ali Al-Zaydi, reflected a serious commitment to curb this chaos. The high-level meeting convened by Al-Zaydi aimed to clarify the points, resulting in firm warnings and direct directives to those factions and the Popular Mobilization Forces, confirming that any transgression against neighboring countries is a blatant violation of the Iraqi constitution and a direct harm to the country's opportunities for revival and development.
This official Iraqi approach has manifested in the constant endeavor to return to the Arab embrace, relying on the deep-rooted historical relations between Iraq and the Gulf states. Perhaps the visit that was scheduled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia carried meanings that go beyond political protocol, as it represented a new step towards consolidating trust and opening wider horizons for cooperation. However, attempts to sabotage this path through the escalation of field aggressions led by armed Iranian factions, along with repeated attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states, and Jordan, revealed the extent of the anxiety felt by forces opposing Iraq's return to its Arab surroundings. The closer Baghdad gets to building balanced relationships with its brothers, the higher the escalation from those who see Iraq's stability as a threat to their cross-border project.
History and reality confirm that Iraq has never been and will never be an open arena for implementing cross-border agendas, and the awareness of the Iraqi state today regarding the reality of these schemes is met with a balanced Gulf stance that clearly distinguishes between the institutions of the Iraqi state and the popular desire for stability, and the behaviors of unruly militias. It is time for these groups to realize that the shield of national sovereignty is stronger than reckless breaches and dependence on foreign powers, and that Iraq's true future lies in its Arab depth and the stability of its institutions. The real bet today is on the ability of the Iraqi state to translate its positions into practical measures that preserve its sovereignty, restore the monopoly of power to its institutions, and prevent its territory from becoming a platform for threatening its neighbors. Iraq does not need more outlaws with guns, but rather a state that regains its decision and builds bridges of trust with its Arab surroundings, because the future of the region will not be shaped by militias, but by strong states that believe that good neighborliness, sovereignty, and respect for borders are the foundation upon which stable relationships and a more secure and prosperous future for all are built.
