Our national football team appeared different in the playoff matches compared to the games it played in the group qualifiers. If they had played at this level earlier, they might have qualified early, which means that the preparation for the playoff matches was different and addressed previous mistakes!
The qualification against Iraq was deserved, and the natural result—considering the course of the match—was a victory for the Saudi team, not just a draw that was sufficient for qualification. It is a gamble to rely on the chance of a draw at a time when a single opportunity for the opposing team in the last second of the match could have dashed the hopes of the Saudis, were it not for the brilliance of goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi in saving a powerful shot, which means that early resolution is always a guarantee of victories!
Now the team has qualified for the World Cup finals, and I fear that this qualification may overshadow the reasons for previous failures, leading those in charge of the team to mistakenly believe they have achieved a mark of success, especially since some previously thought that the team's participation in the last World Cup was commendable, despite finishing last in their group. This raises questions about the level of ambition and the clarity of vision regarding the truth and reality!
Today, I hope that those responsible for the team will stand before the mirror of truth and seek out the mistakes and negatives that caused the team to stumble in the qualifiers before the playoff saved them with a win and a draw. Qualification in itself is no longer an achievement by today’s standards, given the multiple opportunities and easier paths (imagine qualifying from just a win and a draw in only two matches), and a team that previously qualified from two spots in the continent cannot be considered to have achieved anything by qualifying from a sixth spot unless measured by the low ambition that I previously warned about among some officials of the team!
There must be a candid self-assessment and a reevaluation of the plans and programs to support the team's chances of presenting a better performance than previous ones in the World Cup. Bold decisions must be made without favoritism to anyone at the expense of the reputation of Saudi football. In fact, restructuring the decision-making and sports planning system for football has become a necessity to build professional foundations that ensure effective participation that raises the flag of the nation and honors its people!
Finally, we must commend the fan support for the team, which has been a distinguishing feature—as always—while some sports media remain stagnant, mired in bias, failing to distinguish between the national team jersey and the club jersey!
In short... hopes that touch the clouds, and an ambition as great as the Tuwaiq Mountains, cannot be left to the winds of the illusion of commendable participations!
