Traveling by car is supposed to be a beautiful pleasure and a personal choice that saves money and waiting hours, for example, at the airport. You have control over your movement to your destination, and the highways between cities are supposed to be safe in terms of their quality, with complete-service gas stations and small hotels for sleeping, which are available in most countries around the world. They are considered an important economic resource in those countries, especially in the United States, where the experience of traveling by car is an unforgettable pleasure for anyone who has tried it.
Unfortunately, the highways between our cities suffer from poor conditions; maintenance is very slow, and repairs take months or even years. We find that some of these roads, such as the highway between Dammam and the capital Riyadh, were built decades ago and consist of three lanes in each direction. The traffic on it has changed and become noticeably heavy, especially with large trucks in both directions, which cause damage to the road itself, particularly in the right lane that is mostly used. This is the first issue. On the other hand, the density of trucks, the narrowness of the road, and the potholes present pose a danger to owners of small cars. So why isn't there an expansion of the road and the addition of new lanes? There is ample land available on both sides of the road. The idea of constructing a new railway line parallel to the highway between Riyadh and Dammam could be an ideal solution to the congestion on the road. This railway line could be dedicated to transportation, saving energy and reducing pollution while increasing traffic safety on such a vital artery. It could also extend to the western coast of the Kingdom when the land bridge from the east to the west of the Kingdom is implemented, which would make these cities and surrounding areas economic centers for logistics supplies, positioning the Kingdom as an important hub in the regional and global economy.
In fact, I do not know the reason for the poor condition of this road and the lack of regular maintenance. Travelers on it may damage their vehicles due to the many potholes and bumps that cannot be avoided because of the heavy traffic on the road. As for the gas stations on this road, they are somewhat sparse, and I do not understand why there are no permits to establish more service and rest centers. If the issue is that traffic flow is affected by such stations being far from the highway, I wish that traffic authorities and relevant entities would work diligently and efficiently to address the congestion and parking of trucks before the weight stations, which can extend for long distances and threaten traffic safety.
From a personal experience on this road a week ago, it is noticeable that the number of gas stations along the road does not match the volume of heavy traffic, in addition to the poor quality of some existing stations, whether in terms of cleanliness or the availability of basic services such as restrooms, restaurants, rest areas, and quick maintenance services.
Moreover, the large gaps between the stations may expose travelers to critical situations, especially during emergencies or vehicle breakdowns.
The Dammam-Riyadh road is not only viewed as a travel route but also as an economic, commercial, security, and tourism artery. The more we maintain and develop it, the more we elevate the quality of life and align with the blessed vision of our nation.
