The attempt to land two helicopters in one of the most active mountainous areas in Nepal turned into a tragic incident after their blades collided in the air, resulting in one death and another injury, as authorities moved to investigate the reasons for the collision and determine responsibilities.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at the Veritche helipad in the Solu Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, about 250 kilometers from the capital Kathmandu, as the two helicopters were approaching to land, according to the Indian Today newspaper citing the Nepalese Civil Aviation Authority.
The helicopters belong to the companies "Fishtail Air" and "Dynasty Air," and surveillance camera footage showed them getting close to each other before their blades became entangled, leading to their crash.
A local police official in the Solu Khumbu area stated that the collision occurred at the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu helipad, explaining that the injured person was airlifted for treatment, while the body of the deceased was transported to the Lukla area by helicopter.
For his part, an official from the Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the occurrence of the incident, noting that the relevant authorities have begun gathering information and investigating the circumstances, while several details remain unclear.
The mountainous regions of Nepal heavily rely on helicopters due to their rugged terrain and the difficulty of accessing many of their locations, as they are used to transport tourists, mountain climbers, and supplies, in addition to carrying out rescue and evacuation operations.
