The Court of Appeal in the Australian state of Victoria rejected Erin Patterson's appeal today (Friday), who was convicted of killing three relatives of her ex-husband using poisonous mushrooms in a lunch she prepared at her home in 2023. The court also decided to increase her sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Patterson had been sentenced in August 2025 to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 33 years, before she appealed her conviction, while the prosecution filed an appeal seeking to increase the sentence.
The court clarified that the murders were characterized by premeditation and intent, describing them as extremely cold and calculated, considering that the previous sentence did not reflect the seriousness of the crimes committed.
The case dates back to July 2023, when Patterson served a "beef Wellington" dish containing the deadly death cap mushroom to several relatives of her ex-husband, resulting in the deaths of three people, while a fourth person survived after being taken to the hospital and receiving treatment.
