The General Directorate of Public Finance in France was subjected to a cyber attack that resulted in the theft of data from approximately 678,000 individuals and companies, while investigations revealed the suspicion of involvement of an 18-year-old young man and another teenager under 16 in the case.
The French newspaper "Le Monde" reported that the 18-year-old, known as "ChatNoir" in hacking circles, was charged on August 20, and was placed in pre-trial detention, suspected of participating in the cyber attacks targeting the French tax administration systems.
Investigations indicated that the attacks occurred during June and July 2026, during which stolen login data from employees and authorized users to access the financial administration systems was used, allowing access to and extraction of tax data.
The stolen data included tax information, such as individuals' reference income, family allowances, and tax withholding rates, in addition to company data and some real estate information.
The newspaper clarified that another teenager under 16 was arrested on August 26, but was released after questioning, with his electronic devices confiscated for examination.
The authorities suspect that the 18-year-old is linked to the hacking group "ZeroBytes," which claimed responsibility for the attacks, while investigations are ongoing to uncover the remaining perpetrators.
