In a historic judicial ruling that shook the corridors of the digital world and social media platforms in Tunisia, justice has drawn the curtain on one of the most dangerous cases, after the criminal chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance sentenced several prominent content creators and others to 25 years in prison for their involvement in an organized criminal network for money laundering, human trafficking, and the exploitation of minors.
The details of the case were revealed after the indictment chamber of the Court of Appeal referred 24 defendants, including well-known names on the "TikTok" and "Instagram" platforms, to the criminal court following a series of intensive investigations that uncovered the exploitation of digital fame as a cover for extremely serious ethical and financial crimes.
The case files revealed shocking facts, including the defendants' deliberate production, display, and circulation of videos and images with pornographic content featuring children and individuals, aimed at conveying sexual suggestions and practices, as well as broadcasting and distributing sexual assaults via information systems, and forming a network to attract and recruit victims using force, threats, and coercion to achieve illegal gains and launder money.
The court based its issuance of these harsh sentences on the provisions of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law, the decree related to combating crimes connected to communication and information systems, and the Anti-Terrorism and Money Laundering Law, to send a deterrent message to put a definitive end to the exploitation of the digital space in organized crime.
