In a scene that concludes more than a century of resilience, a massive granite boulder that had hung over visitors' heads for decades has fallen, thus turning the page on one of the most prominent natural landmarks in the state of New Hampshire, USA.
The "mysterious hanging rock," estimated to weigh around 80 tons, collapsed in the "Polar Caves" park in the White Mountains region on October 18, coinciding with the last day of the visiting season for 2026, settling on one of the paths frequented by thousands of visitors annually.
The park management announced the incident, confirming that no injuries were reported, according to the New York Post.
The management explained that they would take advantage of the closure period between seasons to assess the collapse site and study the next steps, emphasizing that the safety of visitors and staff is their top priority before reopening the park to the public in the 2027 season.
Opened in 1922, "Polar Caves" is one of the prominent tourist destinations in the area, attracting visitors to explore its rock formations and natural paths, especially during the fall when the surrounding forests are adorned with its distinctive colors.
The park's caves were formed during the last Ice Age, due to glacial movement that contributed to creating a natural scene featuring massive granite blocks. The fallen rock was one of the site's most notable attractions, as visitors used to stop there to take photos and seek shade beneath it.
The park includes nine caves formed by glacial processes, along with walking trails, a rock maze, and a deer park, as well as an area dedicated to gemstone mining, making it a destination that combines nature exploration with recreational activities.
