The dizziness that some people experience when getting up from bed or a chair raises health questions that go beyond the transient feeling of unsteadiness, as it may be linked to a sudden drop in blood pressure due to a change in body position, medically known as "orthostatic hypotension."
This disorder occurs when a portion of blood pools in the lower extremities after standing, and the body takes time to compensate for the change by regulating heartbeats and constricting blood vessels, which may lead to a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain.
Orthostatic hypotension is typically diagnosed when the systolic blood pressure drops by at least 20 mmHg or the diastolic by 10 mmHg within three minutes of standing.
The likelihood of it occurring increases among the elderly, with dehydration, or the use of certain medications, or due to conditions that affect blood pressure regulation.
Specialists recommend rising gradually and avoiding sudden transitions from lying down to standing, and consulting a doctor if dizziness recurs, especially if accompanied by fainting or falling, to determine the cause and choose the appropriate intervention.
