A 60-year-old Chinese woman has become a video game star and a widely followed live streamer after she started playing games six years ago to understand her son's passion, who had previously struggled with addiction during his studies. Today, she is known as "Aunt Juan" and has over 527,000 followers who watch her daily streams.
Chong Guanguan lives in the suburbs of Meizhou in Guangdong Province and had worked in simple jobs like sales and childcare after only completing elementary school, before retiring about a decade ago. In the past, she considered video games a danger to her family, as her youngest son spent long hours in internet cafes, which led to a decline in his academic performance and resulted in long disputes between them over gaming, according to SCMP.
In 2020, Chong noticed that her son, known as Sudi, was spending a lot of time playing after leaving his job, so she decided to try gaming herself to understand why he was so attached to it. Despite her poor eyesight and slow reflexes, she continued to practice with her son's help, and in her early days, she would bump into walls and stairs and struggled to move in a straight line within the game.
Over time, she gained more confidence in her abilities and started live streaming in 2022, surprising her followers with her skills despite her simple appearance that suggests she is a rural grandmother. She also began using terms popular among young gamers and has accumulated over 8,000 hours of gameplay, specializing in shooting games.
Her fame increased in December 2024 when she participated in an exhibition match for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, where she faced a 17-year-old Russian player who was a world champion, and surprisingly managed to eliminate him, making her the talk of the internet. As her popularity grew, some doubted her ability to play, prompting her son to install several cameras to show her playing from different angles.
Sudi is now working full-time as his mother's agent, and their roles have reversed; the mother spends long hours gaming while her son makes sure to cut off the internet at midnight to prevent her from staying up late in front of the screen.
Despite the criticism she faces due to her age, Chong responds that a mother's role should not be limited to household chores, sharing a funny incident when a man recognized her at a meat market, saying, "Aunt Juan, I saw you playing on social media."
Chong believes that gaming helps sharpen the mind and enhance hand-eye coordination, considering it better than spending time aimlessly. She asserts that women her age should not be limited to caring for grandchildren or traditional dancing, concluding her experience with a clear message: "It’s never too late to start learning something new."
