Dizziness occurs when some individuals stand up suddenly due to a temporary drop in blood pressure when changing body position, a condition medically known as orthostatic hypotension.
One specialist in cardiology and vascular diseases indicates that the body needs to quickly reorganize blood pressure and blood distribution when transitioning from sitting or lying down to standing, and this process may not occur quickly enough in some individuals, leading to feelings of dizziness or imbalance.
There are various factors that may cause dizziness upon standing, as it may be related to dehydration and insufficient fluid intake, standing for long periods, low blood pressure, or the effects of certain medications such as blood pressure medications and diuretics. It may also result from disorders in the nervous system or heart, or from blood loss and anemia in some cases. The specialist emphasizes that accurately determining the cause requires a medical evaluation, especially if the dizziness is recurrent or severe.
Dizziness becomes concerning when it recurs or leads to falling or fainting, or if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, visual disturbances, sudden weakness, speech disturbances, or severe headaches. The specialist notes that the occurrence of dizziness with fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath necessitates seeking urgent medical assistance.
It is advised to gradually change positions from lying down to sitting and then standing, to ensure adequate water intake, and to avoid sudden standing, especially after waking up. He also stresses not to adjust blood pressure medication dosages or stop them without medical consultation, emphasizing that the treatment of dizziness depends on identifying its underlying cause rather than just addressing the symptom alone.
