Upon the announcement of the death of King Harald V at the age of 89, the throne of the Kingdom of Norway automatically and directly passed to his son, the Crown Prince, who officially becomes "King Haakon VIII," beginning a new era in the country's history away from the usual European celebratory fanfare.
The idea of ascending the throne without being crowned with a "crown" may seem strange to European monarchies, but it is a constitutional way of life in Norway, as the country abolished traditional coronation ceremonies and the wearing of the crown in 1908. Norway settles for a quiet ceremony that includes holding a Council of State with the government, followed by taking the constitutional oath before the parliament (Storting) and pledging to rule according to the laws. Even if a religious blessing is organized in the Nidaros Cathedral, the crown is placed next to the king symbolically only, without him wearing it.
The new king, who is expected to retain the historic royal motto of his ancestors "Everything for Norway," takes on the leadership of the country amidst the preparations for the official funeral of his late father and a national mourning that recalls the decades King Harald spent serving the Norwegians since he ascended the throne in 1991.
