In a virtual world where humanity may face a nuclear winter, a devastating pandemic, or a widespread collapse of electricity and communication networks, an international team of scientists has identified the countries that possess the best resilience and ability to sustain their populations in the face of a large-scale global disaster, with Australia ranking first.
The study, led by ecologist Florian Jean from the University of Hagen in Germany and published in the journal Global Challenges, examined the ability of countries to provide basic needs for their populations and to keep their institutions functioning, even in the event of a collapse of large parts of the global system.
Why Australia?
The researchers concluded that Australia has a range of advantages that make it more resilient, the most notable being its geographical isolation and its substantial natural, industrial, and agricultural resources.
As a continental country surrounded by oceans, it can tighten border controls in the event of a global pandemic, and it produces large quantities of food and possesses vast mineral reserves, along with an advanced industrial base.
However, Australia is not completely immune; one of its most significant weaknesses is its reliance on importing certain types of fuel and medicine, which could pose a challenge if global supply chains are disrupted for an extended period.
5 Countries Most Resilient
The list of countries with high levels of resilience to global crises includes New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, Argentina, along with Australia.
However, the researchers noted that each country has vulnerabilities that may limit its ability to cope with a comprehensive catastrophic scenario, meaning that the ranking does not guarantee survival, but rather attempts to measure the ability of societies to endure and recover when global systems face a massive shock.
3 Disasters That Could Test Humanity's Survival
The researchers categorized major global risks into three main categories.
The first: the disappearance or sharp decline of sunlight, which could occur in a "nuclear winter" scenario, after a massive asteroid collides with Earth, or as a result of a huge volcanic eruption that blocks sunlight and disrupts photosynthesis, leading to a collapse in agricultural production.
The second: the catastrophic collapse of infrastructure, including electricity, transportation, and communication networks, due to events such as severe geomagnetic storms, electromagnetic pulses, or large-scale cyberattacks.
The third involves biological risks, primarily highly lethal pandemics, whether of natural or artificial origin, which can lead to massive human losses and disruption of essential institutions and services.
What Makes a Country Resilient?
The researchers did not look at wealth alone, but studied a range of factors that determine a society's ability to survive, including food security, natural resources, industrial capacity, energy independence, institutional strength, low levels of social inequality, and geographical isolation.
According to these criteria, wealthy countries with strong agriculture and the ability to produce their basic needs locally have a clear advantage in facing global collapses, especially if they can reduce their dependence on foreign trade.
