في رحلة صيد عادية انطلقت من بلدة هادئة قرب حدود غواتيمالا، تحول المشهد فجأة إلى كابوس مرعب في قلب المحيط الهادئ، حيث واجه الصيادان دانيال وخوسيه رياحاً عاتية وأمواجاً متلاطمة أدت لغرق قاربهما الصغير وسحبهما إلى عرض البحر.
ومع ابتلاع المياه للقارب، لم يتبقَّ أمام الرجلين سوى خيار أخير للتمسك بالحياة: صندوق تبريد بلاستيكي تصادف وجوده على متن السفينة.
خاض الصديقان معركة بقاء استثنائية استمرت 5 أيام متواصلة، محتجزين داخل الصندوق الصغير وسط الأمواج العاتية، دون قطرة ماء واحدة أو لقيمة طعام تسد رمقهما، بينما كانت التيارات البحرية تجرفهما بعيداً عن الشاطئ لمسافة تجاوزت 100 ميل قبالة السواحل المكسيكية.
وفي تلك الأثناء، أطلقت جمعية الصيد المحلية نداء استغاثة عاجل بعد انقطاع الاتصال التام بالرجلين، لتستنفر البحرية المكسيكية قواربها وطائراتها لمسح مساحات شاسعة من المحيط بحثاً عن أي أثر.
الرحلة انتهت بمشهد يحبس الأنفاس توج بجهود الطيران البحري، حيث رصدت اللقطات لحظة العثور على الصيادين وهما يتشبثان بأطراف صندوق التبريد بجسدين أنهكهما الجفاف الشديد والإنهاك.
