A high school in central Sweden experienced a state of panic today (Friday) after an attack carried out by a man armed with a sword, resulting in two teenagers and a third person suffering serious injuries. Authorities announced the arrest of an individual in connection with the incident, confirming that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The attack occurred on Friday afternoon inside Brinell High School in the town of Västerås, coinciding with students returning to school after the summer break, marking the first day for some students in high school.

The Swedish police stated that they received a report at 14:06 local time regarding violence suspected to be potentially fatal, prompting them to deploy all available resources to the school.

A police spokesperson confirmed that a person was arrested at the scene, noting that the situation no longer posed a danger to the public, but declined to comment on whether the attack resulted in fatalities.

For his part, the director of health and medical services in Västmanland County, Jonas Sederberg, stated that two individuals were transported to the hospital in serious condition, while a third person was scheduled to be transferred for treatment, although the nature of their injuries was not clear at that time.

Suspect is 18 years old

The Swedish Radio Agency SVT reported, citing unnamed sources, that the person arrested by the police is 18 years old and was a former student at the school, with a prior conviction for assault.

Sources indicated that he was carrying a sword and wearing a helmet during the attack.

One student from the school, Abdulrahman Salmo, spoke about the moments of terror experienced by the students, saying he saw one of the injured individuals with a stab wound to his arm, before students hurried to call the police and flee the scene for fear of their lives.

Brinell High School has about 450 students aged between 16 and 20 years old.

Initially, authorities imposed security lockdown measures on several schools and public buildings in Västerås, which has a population of about 13,000, before lifting them later, as groups of students were seen leaving the school after the emergency situation ended.

The authorities in Västmanland County stated that they raised the alert level in order to mobilize available resources and gain a clear and comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the attack.

At the same time, the newspaper Expressen reported, citing unnamed sources, that the police fired shots at the suspect.

Sweden recalls previous attacks

The attack brought to mind a series of violent incidents that have occurred in Swedish schools over the past years, most notably the shooting incident in the city of Örebro in February 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 10 people before the attacker committed suicide, marking the worst mass shooting in Sweden's history.

In 2015, a masked attacker killed a teaching assistant and two children with a sword inside a school in western Sweden, before the police shot him dead, with authorities later concluding that the attack was racially motivated.

Following Friday's incident, Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer announced that the government is monitoring developments and is in close contact with the police.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also canceled a speech he was scheduled to give on Saturday, expressing solidarity with all those affected by the attack.

Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson stated that all of Sweden stands with Västerås during this difficult time.
