خيّم الحزن على الجالية الفلسطينية في بريطانيا بعد الفاجعة التي أودت بحياة ثلاثة أفراد من عائلة الخواص؛ إثر غرقهم قبالة ساحل مقاطعة وست ساسكس (جنوبي إنكلترا)، في حادثة وصفتها السلطات البريطانية بأنها «مأساة عائلية مروّعة».
وقع الحادث عصر الثلاثاء عند شاطئ (شورام-باي-سي)، حيث هرعت فرق الشرطة والإسعاف وخفر السواحل وقوارب النجاة بعد تلقي بلاغات عن أربعة أشخاص في وضع خطر داخل المياه. وتمكّنت الفرق من انتشال أفراد العائلة، لكن الأب حسن الخواص (55 عامًا) وزوجته زينة عليان (37 عامًا) وابنتهما سارة (14 عامًا) فارقوا الحياة في الموقع، فيما نُقلت الابنة الصغرى إلى المستشفى وهي في حالة حرجة.
وأفادت الشرطة البريطانية أن التحقيقات الأولية تشير إلى أن العائلة دخلت المياه للسباحة قبل أن تواجه تيارات قوية ومفاجئة. وبعد مراجعة كاميرات المراقبة وشهادات الشهود، رجّحت الشرطة أن ما حدث «حادث عرضي دون أي تدخل من طرف ثالث»، مؤكدة أنها لم تتمكن حتى الآن من تأكيد الروايات التي تتحدث عن تعلق الفتاة بشبكة صيد.
من جهته، قال رئيس المنتدى الفلسطيني في بريطانيا، عدنان حميدان: إن المعلومات المتوفرة لديهم تشير إلى أن الفتاة سارة علقت في شبكة صيد، وأن والدها حاول تحريرها قبل أن تشتد الأمواج، لتلحق بهما الأم ثم الابنة الصغرى. وهي رواية لم تؤكدها الشرطة حتى اللحظة.
السفارة الفلسطينية في لندن نعت العائلة، مؤكدة أن الأب يتحدر من مخيم الرشيدية في جنوب لبنان، وأنها تتابع حالة الابنة الناجية وتنسّق مع السلطات البريطانية في إجراءات التحقيق.
The Palestinian community in Britain is engulfed in sorrow following the tragedy that claimed the lives of three members of the Khawwas family; as a result of their drowning off the coast of West Sussex (southern England), in an incident described by British authorities as a "horrific family tragedy."
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Shoreham-by-Sea beach, where police, ambulance, coast guard teams, and rescue boats rushed after receiving reports of four people in danger in the water. The teams were able to retrieve the family members, but the father, Hassan Khawwas (55 years old), his wife, Zeina Alyan (37 years old), and their daughter, Sarah (14 years old), lost their lives at the scene, while the youngest daughter was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The British police reported that initial investigations indicate that the family entered the water to swim before facing strong and sudden currents. After reviewing surveillance cameras and witness testimonies, the police suggested that what occurred was "an accidental incident without any third-party involvement," confirming that they have not yet been able to verify accounts stating that the girl got caught in a fishing net.
For his part, the head of the Palestinian Forum in Britain, Adnan Hamidan, stated that the information they have suggests that the girl, Sarah, got caught in a fishing net, and that her father tried to free her before the waves intensified, followed by the mother and then the youngest daughter. This account has not yet been confirmed by the police.
The Palestinian Embassy in London mourned the family, confirming that the father hails from the Rashidiya camp in southern Lebanon, and that it is monitoring the condition of the surviving daughter and coordinating with British authorities on the investigation procedures.
