The recent earthquakes have renewed interest in the early earthquake warning system on Android phones, a system developed by "Google" to send alerts to users seconds before the destructive seismic waves arrive, which may be enough time to take actions that reduce risks. The system relies on a network of billions of smartphones equipped with motion sensors, as these devices work together as seismic radars to detect abnormal vibrations, then send the data to "Google" servers for analysis, confirming that an earthquake has occurred before issuing alerts to users near the affected area.
The system is automatically activated on most modern Android phones, with the option to turn it on or off from the safety and emergency settings under the "earthquake alerts" option. The system does not guarantee warnings for all earthquakes, as its accuracy depends on the user's location, the strength of the tremor, and the speed of data analysis; alerts may arrive before, during, or after the earthquake has begun in some cases. The system is also available in a large number of countries, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and operates in conjunction with local seismic monitoring systems where available.
