The SynthID technology, developed by "Google," has achieved its first significant practical success in detecting a fake image that circulated on social media platforms, in a move that reflects the growing reliance on artificial intelligence tools to combat "fabricated" content and limit the spread of deepfakes.
This came after the fact-checking site Snopes was able to prove that an image claiming to show U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell in the hospital was generated by artificial intelligence, by detecting the invisible digital watermark that SynthID technology embeds within automatically generated images. This incident represents the first prominent public use of the technology in revealing misleading content that spread widely.
The technology relies on adding a hidden digital fingerprint within images, which remains detectable even after they are reshared or undergo minor modifications, helping verification platforms distinguish between real images and those generated by artificial intelligence.
Through this technology, "Google" aims to enhance digital transparency amid growing concerns about the use of artificial intelligence tools to produce fake images that are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye, while other tech companies have begun to adopt the system as part of joint efforts to enhance the reliability of digital content.
