Cardiology consultant Dr. Francesco Lo Monaco warned against ignoring several symptoms that may indicate complications from high blood pressure, emphasizing that the disease is known as the "silent killer" because it often does not cause clear symptoms until damage has occurred to the heart and blood vessels.
According to the Mirror newspaper, the doctor explained that millions of people put their hearts under constant pressure due to seemingly harmless daily habits, such as not controlling blood pressure, neglecting the treatment of sleep apnea, weight gain, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity.
He pointed out that the persistence of these factors for long periods may lead to cardiomyopathy or gradual enlargement of the heart muscle, a condition that can develop silently for years before any clear symptoms appear.
Lo Monaco said: "Many believe they will feel immediately if they have a heart problem, but the truth is that changes can occur slowly over the years, especially if blood pressure is not under control."
5 Symptoms Not to Ignore
The cardiologist confirmed that there are five signs that require a doctor's visit as soon as possible, which are: shortness or difficulty in breathing, swelling of the feet or ankles, chest pain, palpitations or irregular heartbeats, and feeling extremely tired or fatigued without explanation.
He explained that these symptoms may indicate that the heart is affected due to high blood pressure or other heart diseases, and they require urgent medical evaluation.
Why is it Called the "Silent Killer"?
The doctor indicated that high blood pressure forces the heart to pump blood harder to overcome the resistance of the blood vessels, initially leading to an increase in the thickness of the heart muscle, which may weaken its efficiency over time, raising the risk of heart failure, arrhythmias, and heart and brain strokes.
Estimates from the British National Health Service indicate that millions of people may suffer from high blood pressure without knowing it, due to the absence of symptoms in the early stages.
5 Daily Habits That Harm the Heart
Lo Monaco warned against five common habits that increase the burden on the heart, which are: not controlling high blood pressure, neglecting the treatment of sleep apnea, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity and weight gain, and lack of movement and physical inactivity.
He added that the good news is that most of these factors can be controlled by keeping blood pressure within normal ranges, treating sleep disorders, achieving a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and reducing alcohol consumption, steps that contribute to reducing the strain on the heart and preventing its complications in the long term.
