Despite the ongoing warnings for decades about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption, nutrition experts confirm that the situation is more complex than it appears, and that the problem lies not in sugar itself but rather in its type, source, and method of consumption.
Excessive consumption of added sugars has been linked to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and dementia, prompting many to adopt what is known as "sugar detox" or to completely refrain from consuming it. This diet is promoted by several influencers on social media as a means to improve skin, enhance focus, and regulate blood sugar levels.
However, nutrition specialists assert, according to the "Telegraph" newspaper, that these claims lack sufficient scientific evidence, and that complete abstinence from sugar may not be a healthy option.
Nutrition and public health expert at Queen Mary University in London, Kawthar Hashim, explains that there is a fundamental difference between the natural sugars found in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, and the free or added sugars found in sweets, soft drinks, juices, and baked goods.
She points out that scientific evidence over the past two decades confirms the necessity of limiting added sugars, while some types of sugar remain essential for vital body functions.
Why does the body need sugar?
Glucose is the primary source of energy in the body, derived from carbohydrates found in whole grain bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, and others.
Richard Hoffman, a nutrition science researcher at the University of Hertfordshire, confirms that the brain relies heavily on glucose, consuming about half of the energy derived from sugar in the body.
When blood glucose levels drop sharply, as can happen in some diabetes patients, brain functions, concentration, and memory may be affected, and in severe cases, it can lead to loss of consciousness.
Research also indicates that the declining ability of brain cells to utilize glucose with aging may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Should we refrain from sugar?
Experts confirm that there is no evidence supporting the idea of "sugar detox," and a recent study conducted on rats presented at the ENDO 2026 conference showed that a diet completely devoid of sucrose led to gut health disorders, increased inflammation, poor blood sugar control, and signs of fatty liver disease.
The researchers concluded that healthy nutrition is based on balance, not on the complete exclusion of sugar.
Not all sugars are created equal
The effect of sugar in the body depends on the speed of its absorption, known as the glycemic index.
Soft drinks and sweetened juices raise blood sugar levels very quickly due to their lack of fiber and protein, increasing the risk of insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart disease.
On the other hand, whole fruits contain fiber that slows down sugar absorption, preventing sharp spikes in glucose levels.
Conversely, fruit juices behave similarly to soft drinks, rapidly delivering large amounts of sugar into the bloodstream.
Best ways to consume sugar healthily
Nutrition experts recommend several dietary habits that help enjoy sweetness while reducing health risks, including:
Choosing whole or dried fruits like dates as snacks or part of breakfast, as they contain fiber that slows sugar absorption and increases feelings of fullness.
Eating sweets after the main meal instead of on an empty stomach, as the presence of fiber, protein, and healthy fats reduces the speed of sugar absorption.
Adding onions or drinking green tea with meals, as they contain the compound "quercetin," which some studies suggest may help reduce glucose absorption.
Consuming nuts with sugary snacks to help limit rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.
Preferring to eat sugary foods in the morning, as the body’s ability to handle glucose is better compared to the afternoon or evening.
Experts conclude that the problem is not with sugar itself, but with the excessive consumption of added and refined sugars, emphasizing that following a balanced diet based on natural foods and limiting sugary drinks and processed sweets remains the best option for maintaining health.
