في حادثة مروعة هزت منطقة المنونغاهيلا فالي بولاية بنسلفانيا الأمريكية، وقع انفجار مدوٍّ في مصنع «كليروتون كوك وركس» أكبر منشأة لإنتاج فحم الكوك في أمريكا الشمالية، اليوم (الإثنين)، أسفر عن مقتل شخص واحد على الأقل، وإصابة العشرات بجروح خطيرة، بما في ذلك حروق من الدرجة الثالثة، وحصار عدد من العمال تحت الأنقاض.
بدأت الأحداث عندما اندلع حريق في المصنع، تبعه انفجار هائل أدى إلى انهيار أجزاء من المنشأة وتطاير الحطام، ووفقا لتقارير إدارة الطوارئ في مقاطعة أليغيني، تم نقل سبعة أشخاص إلى مستشفيات شبكة أليغيني الصحية، بينما أفادت مصادر أن العديد من المصابين يعانون من حروق شديدة من الدرجة الثالثة نتيجة التعرض للحرارة الشديدة والمواد الكيميائية المنبعثة.
وأرسلت السلطات 15 سيارة إسعاف من مقاطعة أليغيني، إضافة إلى وحدات إسعاف محلية ومروحيات طبية، للتعامل مع الحادث الذي وُصف بأنه «حادث إصابات جماعية» وأكدت السلطات أن اثنين من العمال لا يزالان في عداد المفقودين، بينما تستمر جهود الإنقاذ لتحرير آخرين محاصرين تحت الأنقاض.
وأعربت السلطات المحلية والوطنية عن حزنها العميق إزاء الحادث، ووصف السيناتور جون فيترمان، الذي كان عمدة بلدة برادوك المجاورة سابقا، الحادث بأنه «مأساة مطلقة»، متعهدا بدعم العمال وأسرهم، وكتب حاكم ولاية بنسلفانيا جوش شابيرو على منصة «إكس»: «الوضع لا يزال نشطا، ونطلب من السكان المجاورين اتباع توجيهات السلطات المحلية، انضموا إليّ وزوجتي في الصلاة من أجل مجتمع كليروتون».
أثارت الحادثة مخاوف بيئية فورية، حيث أصدرت إدارة الصحة في مقاطعة أليغيني تحذيرات للسكان في دائرة نصف قطرها ميل واحد من المصنع، مطالبة إياهم بإغلاق النوافذ والأبواب، وتعديل أنظمة التكييف لإعادة تدوير الهواء الداخلي، لتجنب استنشاق الدخان والجزيئات الملوثة، ورغم ارتفاع مستويات التلوث حول المصنع، أكدت الإدارة أن مستويات السخام وثاني أكسيد الكبريت لم تتجاوز المعايير الفيدرالية للفترة قصيرة الأمد.
ويقع مصنع كليروتون كوك وركس على ضفاف نهر المنونغاهيلا، وهو أكبر منشأة لإنتاج فحم الكوك في أمريكا الشمالية، حيث ينتج 4.3 مليون طن سنويا ويوظف حوالى 1400 عامل، ويُعد فحم الكوك مكونا أساسيا في صناعة الصلب، حيث يتم تسخين الفحم في غياب الأكسجين لإنتاجه، وهي عملية تتطلب منشآت معقدة وتكنولوجيا متقدمة.
المصنع واجه على مر السنين انتقادات متكررة بسبب التلوث البيئي، في عام 2019، وافق على تسوية دعوى قضائية بقيمة 8.5 مليون دولار لتقليل انبعاثات السخام والروائح الكريهة، بعد حريق عام 2018 ألحق أضرارا بمعدات التحكم بالتلوث، ما تسبب في إطلاقات متكررة لثاني أكسيد الكبريت.
In a horrific incident that shook the Monongahela Valley in Pennsylvania, a loud explosion occurred at the Clairton Coke Works, the largest coke production facility in North America, today (Monday), resulting in at least one death and dozens of serious injuries, including third-degree burns, and trapping several workers under the rubble.
The events began when a fire broke out at the plant, followed by a massive explosion that caused parts of the facility to collapse and debris to scatter. According to reports from the Allegheny County Emergency Management, seven people were transported to hospitals within the Allegheny Health Network, while sources indicated that many of the injured suffered severe third-degree burns due to exposure to intense heat and emitted chemicals.
Authorities dispatched 15 ambulances from Allegheny County, in addition to local emergency units and medical helicopters, to handle the incident, which was described as a "mass casualty event." Officials confirmed that two workers are still missing, while rescue efforts continue to free others trapped under the debris.
Local and national authorities expressed their deep sorrow over the incident, with Senator John Fetterman, who was previously the mayor of the nearby town of Braddock, describing the event as an "absolute tragedy," pledging support for the workers and their families. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro wrote on the platform "X": "The situation is still active, and we ask residents nearby to follow local authorities' guidance. Join me and my wife in praying for the Clairton community."
The incident raised immediate environmental concerns, as the Allegheny County Health Department issued warnings to residents within a one-mile radius of the plant, urging them to close windows and doors and adjust air conditioning systems to recirculate indoor air to avoid inhaling smoke and contaminated particles. Despite elevated pollution levels around the plant, the department confirmed that soot and sulfur dioxide levels did not exceed federal standards for short-term exposure.
The Clairton Coke Works is located on the banks of the Monongahela River and is the largest coke production facility in North America, producing 4.3 million tons annually and employing about 1,400 workers. Coke is a key component in steel production, where coal is heated in the absence of oxygen to produce it, a process that requires complex facilities and advanced technology.
The plant has faced repeated criticism over the years for environmental pollution. In 2019, it agreed to a settlement of $8.5 million to reduce soot emissions and foul odors after a 2018 fire damaged pollution control equipment, leading to repeated sulfur dioxide releases.
