ضربت فيضانات منطقة نيويورك وولاية نيوجيرسي، الليلة الماضية، بسبب هطول أمطار غزيرة تسببت بها عاصفة فوق المنطقة وتأثرت بها أيضاً كل من فيرجينيا وماريلاند وبنسلفانيا، حيث سجّلت خدمات الأرصاد الجوية كميات غير مسبوقة من التساقطات تسببت في اضطرابات واسعة في حركة النقل إلى جانب تنفيذ العديد من عمليات الإنقاذ.
وأعلن حاكم نيوجيرسي فيل ميرفي حالة الطوارئ في مقاطعات عدة، ودعا السكان إلى التزام منازلهم، بينما حذرت السلطات من ظروف سير خطرة وازدياد خطر الفيضانات المفاجئة في مناطق مكتظة بالسكان.
وفي نيويورك، علقت مطارات جون إف كينيدي ولاغارديا ونيوارك رحلات المغادرة مؤقتاً، بينما تعرض مترو المدينة لاضطرابات شديدة وتوقفت خطوط عدة وغمرت المياه محطات كثيرة، خصوصاً في تشيلسي وجنوب مانهاتن، وتسببت ازدحامات مرورية كبيرة في شلل طرق رئيسية عدة في المدينة.
ولا تزال حالة الطوارئ بسبب الفيضانات سارية في وسط فيرجينيا، دون تسجيل أي إصابات بسبب هذه الفيضانات حتى الآن، بينما ذكرت سلطات نيويورك أن بعض أحياء المدينة شهدت أمطاراً راوحت كميتها بين 38 و45 مليمتراً خلال أقل من ساعتين، أما في نيوجيرسي فوصلت كميات الأمطار إلى 150 مليمتراً، وقد تسبّب تشبّع كل من التربة وشبكات الصرف في تفاقم الفيضانات، وتحركت الأمطار الغزيرة نحو الشرق.
ودعت السلطات إلى ضرورة أخذ أعلى درجات اليقظة والحذر من الفيضانات، إذ لا تزال بعض الطرق غير صالحة للمرور، بينما تشهد شبكات النقل اضطرابات جزئية، ما استدعى إجراء أعمال صيانة وإصلاح لمعالجة الأوضاع.
وأعادت هذه الفيضانات إلى الواجهة موضوع التكيف الحضري مع أحوال الطقس القصوى. وقال المرشح الديمقراطي لرئاسة بلدية نيويورك زهران مامداني عبر منصة "إكس" إن بنية المدينة التحتية في حاجة إلى تحديث لمواجهة "هذه الحقيقة المناخية الجديدة".
Floods hit the New York area and New Jersey last night due to heavy rainfall caused by a storm over the region, which also affected Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The weather services recorded unprecedented amounts of precipitation that led to widespread disruptions in transportation, alongside numerous rescue operations.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in several counties and urged residents to stay indoors, while authorities warned of hazardous driving conditions and an increased risk of flash floods in densely populated areas.
In New York, John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports temporarily suspended outgoing flights, while the city’s subway experienced severe disruptions, with several lines halted and many stations flooded, particularly in Chelsea and Lower Manhattan. Major traffic jams caused paralysis on several main roads in the city.
The state of emergency due to the floods remains in effect in central Virginia, with no injuries reported from these floods so far. Meanwhile, New York authorities stated that some neighborhoods in the city experienced rainfall amounts ranging from 38 to 45 millimeters in less than two hours, while in New Jersey, rainfall reached 150 millimeters. The saturation of both the soil and drainage systems exacerbated the flooding, and heavy rains moved eastward.
Authorities called for the utmost vigilance and caution regarding the floods, as some roads remain impassable, while transportation networks are experiencing partial disruptions, necessitating maintenance and repair work to address the situations.
These floods have brought back to the forefront the issue of urban adaptation to extreme weather conditions. Democratic mayoral candidate Zahran Mamdani stated on the platform "X" that the city's infrastructure needs updating to confront "this new climate reality."
