The Croatian star "Luka Modrić" could not hold back his tears in his last match wearing the Real Madrid jersey, following the heavy defeat in the semi-finals of the 2025 Club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain with a score of four goals to nil. This harsh ending marks the conclusion of his historic journey with "Los Merengues," as he refused to renew his contract and is preparing to move to AC Milan on a free transfer, according to a report broadcasted by "RT".
In an emotional scene, head coach "Alonso" approached "Modrić" after the match, embraced him, and kissed his head, a gesture that some interpreted as an indirect apology for the sad ending that did not suit a legend of Modrić's caliber. Alonso said in the press conference: "Luka will always be remembered as an icon in football, not because of one match."
He expressed his regret over the loss, pointing out that the disastrous start to the match is what decided the outcome: "We conceded two goals in the first ten minutes, which put us under constant pressure. Paris is a team that has been stable for two years, while we are at the beginning of a new project." He added: "This match has taught us many lessons. We have a lot of work ahead, and we must make the best use of the coming weeks."
Alonso concluded his statements with an emotional message saying: "Despite the short time I spent with Luka and Lucas Vázquez, I tried to make their farewell to Real a special moment. I thank them on behalf of everyone for everything they have given to this great club."
The defeat against Paris Saint-Germain was not just an exit from the tournament, but it also capped a bitter season for Real Madrid, where they lost La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, settling for only two titles: the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
As for Modrić, he ended his career with the team after participating in 597 matches, becoming the ninth most represented player in the club's history since joining in the summer of 2012 from Tottenham. Despite renewing for just one additional month to participate in the World Cup, the dream of a happy ending did not come true.
