The Spanish Footballers' Association announced its opposition to holding the match between Barcelona and Villarreal in La Liga in Miami, United States, in an official statement issued this evening (Thursday). The statement read: “The Spanish Footballers' Association, with the support of club leaders, opposes holding La Liga matches outside Spain. The Spanish Footballers' Association and all leaders of the first division clubs met on Thursday evening to evaluate the request announced by the Spanish Football Federation on August 11, regarding raising a proposal to UEFA and FIFA to hold a match from the league this season outside Spanish territory. The association requested a detailed report from La Liga containing all the details in order to inform the players and understand their opinions, but in its response, the association denied any responsibility for presenting the plan in advance, and only committed to informing them about the progress of obtaining the permits.

In light of this situation, we see that starting the procedures for a project led by the league and approved by the board of the Spanish federation without providing any information to the players constitutes a lack of respect towards them, especially since it involves changes at the sporting level and requires them to travel as workers outside the national territory within the framework of a domestic competition.

They did not speak with the players or provide any information; this is considered a lack of respect towards football players. We are united; we want respect and transparency. With this firm statement, the association demands that all relevant Spanish institutions fully disclose the information related to this project, which could change the competition and requires dialogue, negotiations, and prior agreement with all parties, especially with the key stakeholders (the players).”
