Amid fears of renewed confrontations, American media revealed on Wednesday that dozens of Israeli fighter jets conducted a large-scale air maneuver that approached the Iranian border, a move described as aimed at deterring Tehran and showcasing power.
A report from the American website "Axios" stated that the aircraft flew more than 800 miles from Israel in a maneuver that took place on Monday, ahead of the Israeli elections scheduled for October 27, and on the same day that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Ovda Air Base, with no announced connection between the visit and the air sortie.
The report quoted American and Israeli officials saying that the maneuver was not exceptional, and its stated goal was to deter Iran from launching attacks on Israel. However, the nature of the move raised concerns that it might provoke Tehran to respond, potentially reigniting confrontations between the two sides.
The site reported that informed sources indicated that dozens of fighter jets and aerial refueling aircraft participated in the maneuver, following a path simulating a potential attack on Iran through Syrian and Iraqi airspace, before changing direction as they approached the Iranian border and returning to Israel.
American officials noted that Tel Aviv was aware that Iranian air defense systems would detect the sortie, and that it had informed Washington in advance that it was a military exercise aimed at showcasing power and deterrence. However, some American sources expressed the belief that Israel might have hoped Iran would respond by firing at the aircraft, providing a justification for launching military strikes against it, according to the report.
The maneuver comes amid indications that Israel is exploring new military options against Iran. Axios reported last week that Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed, in early October, the possibility of carrying out a new large-scale military operation against Tehran before the Israeli and American elections.
The report stated that Netanyahu conveyed his concerns to Trump regarding Israeli intelligence related to Iranian steps to rebuild its nuclear program, noting that the U.S. president initially seemed more inclined to resume attacks before retracting his support for the proposal.
In a related context, the report quoted an Israeli official saying that Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir would not allow any unjustified military activity that could undermine the elections scheduled for October 27, referring to the sensitivity of the political and security phase, and concerns that any regional escalation could affect the internal situation.
In statements made today during a military graduation ceremony, Netanyahu accused Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei of following in his father's footsteps and allowing Iranian scientists to continue working on developing nuclear weapons.
Netanyahu said, "He has lifted the restrictions, and Iran is once again trying to develop its death bombs," adding that "the only way to completely eliminate this threat is to overthrow the regime in Iran," emphasizing that he has issued directives to the Israeli army, the Mossad, and security agencies in this regard.
These developments reveal the intertwining of military and security calculations with political obligations in Israel, at a time when the prospects for resuming confrontation with Iran remain present, amid fears that moves aimed at deterrence and showcasing power could spark an escalation whose repercussions would be difficult to contain.
