The Polish authorities have arrested a suspect in the planning of the assassination of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, just hours after investigations were revealed regarding threats targeting him and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, following the receipt of security information described as reliable, according to a report by Bloomberg (Sunday).
Tusk and Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced the arrest of the suspect in two posts on the platform "X", while statements from security officials revealed that the man is in his sixties and that authorities are investigating his connections to extremist groups, without confirming any external links to the case.
Kierwiński stated in remarks to the Polish TV station TVP, (Sunday), that the suspect hails from the Lower Silesia region, suggesting that he may be active in local extremist circles. For his part, the spokesperson for the Polish special services, Jacek Dobrzyniecki, told TVN24 that the accused was apprehended in the southwest of the country, without disclosing his identity.
According to Polish media, it is believed that the tip-off that contributed to uncovering the plot came from a person with information about an attempt to recruit members for an extremist organization that adopts anti-government stances via social media, to carry out a shooting operation.
The officials' statements in Warsaw came after an emergency meeting held on the morning of (Sunday), which included representatives from the Polish police, the Internal Security Agency, and the state protection agency, to discuss developments related to the case.
Although security officials did not link the suspected plot to Russia and its ongoing war in Ukraine, Bloomberg noted that Poland has become a major hub for what is known as hybrid attacks launched by Moscow against Europe, which have intensified in recent months. On the other hand, Western intelligence agencies have warned executives in European defense companies that Russia is intensifying efforts to assassinate them, according to a report by the Financial Times (Sunday), citing sources in the intelligence community that were not disclosed.
Russia had warned in late September that it considers arms manufacturing companies in European countries that assist in supplying Ukraine with weapons as "potential military targets."
