The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced today (Thursday) that Tehran is still studying Washington's response to its proposal, which could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 7 days, indicating that it may respond within days.
The Iranian news agency "Tasnim" quoted Araghchi as saying, "The diplomatic process is still ongoing."
Attacks on oil and gas tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz recorded the highest weekly level since the outbreak of the Iran War last week, according to what the "Reuters" agency reported today, citing maritime security sources monitoring incidents in the region.
The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), led by the U.S. Navy, stated in a memo issued on Sunday that attacks, attempted attacks, and harassment operations are still ongoing in the strait, including the flying of drones over ships, surveillance operations, and radio communications from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
The center added, "These activities continue to demonstrate Iran's intent to assert its presence along major shipping lanes and maintain pressure on transiting vessels," and according to data collected by three specialized maritime security sources, there were at least 12 attacks targeting oil and liquefied natural gas tankers in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz from September 28 to October 5.
The sources confirmed that this number represents the highest toll of attacks in a single week since the start of the U.S. war with Iran on February 28.
In contrast, separate data collected by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations agency, recorded nine incidents involving vessels during the same period.
Maritime sources explained to "Reuters" that the international organization usually takes longer to verify incidents and officially record them.
The United States is hinting at the possibility of resuming military operations against Iran, amid ongoing military buildup and preparations.
The U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, has directed the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to complete preparations for resuming major combat operations against Iran, while President Donald Trump is considering the timing of potential strikes, without having made a final decision yet.
