In a new step that deepens the tension between Washington and Tehran, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his assertion that the Strait of Hormuz has become "American territory," after posting a map of the vital maritime corridor on his platform (Truth Social) with the phrase "New American Land" written over it, in an escalation that Tehran deemed a "political illusion" that must be corrected.
Trump's statements come at a sensitive moment in the conflict, as he said during a rally in New York that he would soon announce the strait's affiliation with the United States, adding: "After we finish defeating Iran... I will announce that the Strait of Hormuz will be American land."
The Iranian response was swift and sharp; the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, confirmed that the strait is "closed despite American claims," and that its opening is conditional on "changing American behavior and fulfilling commitments." He also warned that any country joining the American sanctions would be considered an "enemy" and would have its interests harmed.
As the war of words escalates, maritime navigation data recorded a notable shift in shipping routes, with more than 80% of the traffic heading towards the Omani side of the strait, indicating a change in crossing patterns under the pressure of the crisis, according to reports from (Haaretz) and Kpler.
The American escalation coincided with tightening the economic noose on Iran, as Washington prepares to impose a package of sanctions described as "the toughest in history," while Tehran links any easing in navigation to stopping what it calls the "economic war" against it.
As tensions continue, the Strait of Hormuz—which before the war accounted for nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas exports—remains an open arena for escalation possibilities, amid international questions about whether Washington is using the "American land" rhetoric as a negotiating pressure tactic or as a prelude to a larger field step in one of the world's most sensitive maritime corridors.
