أعرب الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، عن «خيبة أمل كبيرة» من رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، الذي رفض السماح للولايات المتحدة باستخدام قاعدة دييغو غارسيا الجوية لشن ضربات على إيران، بحسب ما جاء في مقابلة مع صحيفة «تليغراف» البريطانية، اليوم (الإثنين).
وكان ترمب قد وصف جزيرة دييغو غارسيا بأنها إستراتيجية للغاية، داعياً بريطانيا لعدم إعادتها إلى جمهورية موريشيوس، باعتبار أن الأخيرة جزيرة بالمحيط الهندي، لا ترتبط بحدود برية مع أي دولة أخرى، وأقرب جيرانها؛ مدغشقر وجزر القمر وسيشل وجزر رينيون الفرنسية.
وأكد على ضرورة ألا يفقد رئيس الوزراء البريطاني ستارمر السيطرة على دييغو غارسيا لأي سبب كان، بتوقيعه عقد إيجار هش في أحسن الأحوال لمدة 100 عام. وعلق ترمب: «بريطانيا تخطط -بلا أي مبرر- لمنح جزيرة دييغو غارسيا ذات الأهمية الحيوية للولايات المتحدة، إلى موريشيوس»، واصفاً الخطوة بأنها «ضعيفة» و«حماقة كبرى».
وشنت أمريكا وإسرائيل (السبت) هجوماً واسع النطلق على إيران، التي ردت باستهداف إسرائيل ودول الخليج والدول المجاورة.
ولوّح الرئيس الأمريكي في 19 فبراير باستخدام بلاده القاعدة العسكرية الموجودة في جزيرة دييغو غارسيا بالمحيط الهندي، أثناء توجيه ضربة محتملة ضد إيران.
وفصلت بريطانيا عام 1965 جزيرة دييغو غارسيا، عن بقية أرخبيل ساغوش، وقدمتها للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية التي أقامت عليها قاعدة عسكرية مشتركة، استخدمتها واشنطن في عملياتها العسكرية بأفغانستان والعراق.
في 2019، اعتمدت الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة، وبأغلبية ساحقة، قراراً يطالب بريطانيا بإنهاء إدارتها لجزر شاغوس، في المحيط الهندي، وتسليمها لموريشيوس.
وفي مايو 2025، وقّعت موريشيوس وبريطانيا اتفاق نقل الجزر، ونُظّم استخدام قاعدة دييغو غارسيا من قبل بريطانيا بعقد إيجار لمدة 99 عاماً.
ومُنحت بريطانيا بموجب الاتفاق، حق تمديد استخدام القاعدة لمدة 40 عاماً إضافية بعد انتهاء فترة الـ99 عاماً، إلا أن الاتفاق لا يزال غير نافذ لعدم استكمال إجراءات المصادقة عليه في برلمانَي البلدين.
The American President Donald Trump expressed "great disappointment" with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who refused to allow the United States to use the Diego Garcia airbase to launch strikes on Iran, according to an interview with the British newspaper "Telegraph" today (Monday).
Trump had described Diego Garcia Island as extremely strategic, urging Britain not to return it to the Republic of Mauritius, considering that the latter is an island in the Indian Ocean, with no land borders with any other country, and its closest neighbors are Madagascar, the Comoros, Seychelles, and the French island of Réunion.
He emphasized that British Prime Minister Starmer must not lose control of Diego Garcia for any reason, by signing a fragile lease agreement for a maximum of 100 years. Trump commented: "Britain is planning - without any justification - to give the vital Diego Garcia Island to Mauritius," describing the move as "weak" and "a major folly."
The U.S. and Israel launched a wide-ranging attack on Iran on Saturday, which responded by targeting Israel, Gulf countries, and neighboring states.
The American president hinted on February 19 at using the military base located on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean during a potential strike against Iran.
In 1965, Britain separated Diego Garcia Island from the rest of the Chagos Archipelago and handed it over to the United States, which established a joint military base there, used by Washington in its military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In 2019, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution calling on Britain to end its administration of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean and hand them over to Mauritius.
In May 2025, Mauritius and Britain signed an agreement for the transfer of the islands, and the use of Diego Garcia base by Britain was organized under a 99-year lease agreement.
Under the agreement, Britain was granted the right to extend the use of the base for an additional 40 years after the expiration of the 99-year period, but the agreement is still not in effect due to the failure to complete the ratification procedures in the parliaments of both countries.
