بعد 14 عاماً من الإغلاق، ناقش وزير الخارجية السوري أسعد الشيباني، اليوم (الأربعاء)، مع المبعوث الأمريكي إلى سورية توم براك، في دمشق، الترتيبات اللوجستية والسياسية اللازمة لإعادة تفعيل السفارة الأمريكية في سورية.
وذكرت وزارة الخارجية السورية في بيان أن الجانبين، بحثا عدداً من الملفات الإستراتيجية التي تؤسس لمرحلة جديدة من التعاون بين البلدين، مبينة أن الجانبين شددا على الالتزام المطلق بوحدة الأراضي السورية وسيادة الدولة على كامل جغرافيتها.
استعرض الجانبان خلال اللقاء، الخطوات العملية المنجزة في ملف اندماج قوات سورية الديمقراطية «قسد» ضمن مؤسسات الدولة السورية.
أوضحت الوزارة أن براك بحث مع الشيباني أهمية دعم سورية في مكافحة تنظيم «داعش» وتفعيل دورها كشريك أساسي في الأمن الإقليمي، مبينة المبعوث الأمريكي أكد اهتمام كبرى الشركات الأمريكية بالمشاركة في النهضة الاقتصادية السورية، خصوصاً في قطاع النفط والطاقة، وفتح آفاق الاستثمار أمام الخبرات الدولية.
كانت إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، قد أبلغت الكونغرس، عزمها المضي قدماً في خطط إعادة فتح السفارة الأمريكية بالعاصمة السورية دمشق، والتي أُغلقت في عام 2012، بحسب مذكرة أصدرتها الإدارة إلى الكونغرس.
وتسلمت الحكومة السورية، في 15 فبراير الجاري قاعدة «الشدادي» العسكرية الواقعة شمالي شرق البلاد، بعد التنسيق مع الجانب الأمريكي، وذلك بعد أيام من إعلان القوات الأمريكية إخلاء قاعدة «التنف» القريبة من الحدود الأردنية العراقية جنوب شرقي سورية.
After 14 years of closure, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani discussed today (Wednesday) in Damascus with the U.S. envoy to Syria, Tom Brack, the logistical and political arrangements necessary to reactivate the U.S. embassy in Syria.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that the two sides discussed a number of strategic files that lay the groundwork for a new phase of cooperation between the two countries, noting that both sides emphasized their absolute commitment to the unity of Syrian territory and the state's sovereignty over its entire geography.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the practical steps accomplished regarding the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) within the institutions of the Syrian state.
The ministry clarified that Brack discussed with Al-Shibani the importance of supporting Syria in combating ISIS and activating its role as a key partner in regional security, indicating that the U.S. envoy confirmed the interest of major American companies in participating in the Syrian economic revival, particularly in the oil and energy sectors, and opening investment opportunities for international expertise.
The administration of President Donald Trump had informed Congress of its intention to move forward with plans to reopen the U.S. embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which was closed in 2012, according to a memorandum issued by the administration to Congress.
The Syrian government received the "Al-Shaddadi" military base located in the northeast of the country on February 15, after coordinating with the U.S. side, just days after U.S. forces announced the evacuation of the "Al-Tanf" base near the Jordanian-Iraqi border in southeastern Syria.
