زلزال هزّ الخارجية البريطانية، خصوصا بعد تسريب رسائل إلكترونية تكشف علاقة سفيرها لدى الولايات المتحدة بيتر ماندلسون بالأمريكي جيفري إبستين الذي أدين بجرائم جنسية قبل وفاته، وتتجاوز المجاملات البروتوكولية. إحداها تهنئة بعيد ميلاد، يصف فيها الأخير بأنه «أفضل صديق».
وقالت الخارجية البريطانية في بيان إن رسائل البريد الإلكتروني بين الدبلوماسي المخضرم البالغ 71 عاما ورجل الأعمال الأمريكي التي كشف عنها هذا الأسبوع «تظهر أن عمق ونطاق علاقة بيتر ماندلسون مع جيفري إبستين يختلفان كليا عما كان معروفا في وقت تعيينه».
وأضافت أنه «في ضوء ذلك، واحتراما لضحايا جرائم إبستين، فقد تمت إقالته من منصب السفير بأثر فوري».
واشتهر ماندلسون بتحركات سرية خلال مسيرة مهنية استمرت لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود، وأُقيل من المنصب الدبلوماسي البريطاني والرفيع بعد الكشف هذا الأسبوع عن عدد من الخطابات ورسائل البريد الإلكتروني التي وجهها إلى إبستين.
A scandal has shaken the British Foreign Office, especially after leaked emails revealed the relationship between its ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, and American Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sexual crimes before his death, going beyond mere diplomatic niceties. One of these includes a birthday greeting in which the latter is described as "the best friend."
The British Foreign Office stated in a statement that the emails between the 71-year-old seasoned diplomat and the American businessman revealed this week "show that the depth and scope of Peter Mandelson's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein are entirely different from what was known at the time of his appointment."
It added that "in light of this, and out of respect for the victims of Epstein's crimes, he has been dismissed from his position as ambassador with immediate effect."
Mandelson is known for his secretive maneuvers during a career spanning more than three decades, and he was removed from his high-ranking British diplomatic post after the revelation this week of several letters and emails he sent to Epstein.
