In what has been described as the largest popular movement since the outbreak of the war on Gaza, the "People's Strike" paralyzed Israel today (Sunday). Tens of thousands demonstrated across the country demanding a comprehensive deal with Hamas that would lead to the release of all hostages held since the attack on October 7, 2023.
The strike activities began at the "Prisoners' Square" in Tel Aviv, where protesters raised a massive Israeli flag adorned with pictures of the captives. The crowds moved to block key roads, including the Ayalon Highway, Route 1 (Jerusalem - Tel Aviv), Route 6, and Route 4, in addition to intermittent closures at major intersections such as Sha'ar HaNegev, Na'ale, Shilat, and Karkur.
Demonstrators gathered outside the homes of ministers in response to the strike called by the families of the captives to pressure the government and demand a prisoner exchange.
Israeli media reported that dozens of protesters gathered outside the homes of ministers, including Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Education Minister Yoav Kisch, and Minister for the Negev and Galilee Yitzhak Wasserlauf.
It was reported that protests erupted in over 350 locations, while hundreds of demonstrators from Tel Aviv University blocked the main Mordechai Namir Road in Tel Aviv from both directions, demanding the return of captives held in Gaza and an end to the war.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that protesters closed Highway 1 at the entrance to Jerusalem to demand the return of those held in the Gaza Strip.
For its part, the Israeli police confirmed the arrest of 32 people during the protests calling for an end to the war in Gaza and the return of the captives.
Channel 14 reported that the protesters raised banners encouraging refusal of military service and chanted slogans attacking Israel and the army.
The Israeli Families of Captives Authority announced that it would set up a protest tent tomorrow at the Gaza border, stating, "The families will sleep there, will struggle there, and will announce from there the continuation of the struggle to bring back their loved ones," according to their statement. They reported the launch of a maritime fleet on the Sea of Galilee to demand an end to the war and the return of all captives.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority quoted the wife of captive Omri Meiran as saying that today's strike and protests are "just the beginning" amid a determination to escalate what she called the struggle.
Meanwhile, the mother of Israeli captive Matan Engrist said, "Today everything stopped to bring back the kidnapped and soldiers," according to the Israeli army radio.
In the meantime, a survey by Maariv revealed that 16% of Israelis intend to participate in the strike in support of saving the captives and soldiers, while 40% do not intend to strike but agree with its goals. The survey indicated that 29% of Israelis do not intend to strike and do not agree with its objectives.
The strike began at 7 a.m. local time in many cities and towns, and hundreds of local authorities and organizations are expected to join the protest, with many companies announcing they would allow their employees to participate in the initiative.
Today's protest activities include parades, speeches, and performances in what is called the "Hostages' Square" in Tel Aviv, as well as other locations, and meetings with survivors of captivity and families of the captives.
The major demonstration is scheduled to take place later today in front of the Ministry of Defense and Habima Square in Tel Aviv.
