About 20 people were killed and more than 40 others were injured in Russian strikes that targeted the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions in Ukraine late on Monday. The Ukrainian Air Force announced that Russia launched 37 drones and two missiles at night, adding that its air defense systems shot down 32 of those drones.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the armed forces targeted a military airport belonging to the Ukrainian forces and a training center for drone operators, according to the TASS news agency.
For his part, the head of the Ukrainian president's office, Andriy Yermak, confirmed that 17 people were killed and 42 were injured as a result of a series of shelling that hit a detention center, condemning it as "another war crime committed by the Russians."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also stated that the shelling of the prison "was not accidental." He said in a statement on social media that the strike was intentional and deliberate, and that the Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians in that facility.
The strike came on the anniversary of an attack that targeted a similar detention center in an occupied Ukrainian region three years ago, which Kyiv attributed to Moscow, and reports indicated that it resulted in the deaths of dozens of captured Ukrainian soldiers.
Russia carried out 8 strikes on the Zaporizhzhia region, hitting the prison, according to Ivan Fedorov, the head of the military administration. Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets considered the attack on Zaporizhzhia as further evidence of Russian war crimes. He commented on social media: "People held in detention centers should not lose their right to life and protection."
Three attacks on the Dnipropetrovsk region resulted in at least 4 deaths and 8 injuries, according to local administration head Serhiy Lysak on Telegram.
On the Russian side, one person was killed in the southern Rostov region as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack, according to regional governor Yuri Sliusar.
