Iraqi sources revealed that the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Ismail Qaani, visited the capital Baghdad for 10 hours, during which he met with several prominent leaders of the ruling "Coordination Framework" alliance, but he did not meet with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.
Sources confirmed to "Okaz" that Qaani held separate meetings with the head of the State of Law coalition Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of the Wisdom Movement Ammar al-Hakim, the head of the Fatah Alliance Hadi al-Amiri, and the head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq Hammam Hamoudi.
According to the sources, the discussions focused on developments in the regional situation, in addition to discussing the political situation in Iraq, especially the upcoming elections and the course of alliances within the Coordination Framework.
Following the Iranian official's visit, the Coordination Framework held an emergency meeting last night, attended by the Iraqi Prime Minister in the office of the leader of the Wisdom Movement Ammar al-Hakim, to discuss the security situation that Baghdad has witnessed, along with addressing important issues including the restriction of arms to the state.
“Okaz” learned that the meeting focused on two issues: the restriction of arms to the state and the Popular Mobilization Law, which has sparked wide controversy between Washington and Baghdad recently, while the meeting did not resolve the issue of restricting arms to the state due to the opposition of some factions of the Popular Mobilization to this direction.
Sources stated: “The meeting took place amid tensions regarding the Popular Mobilization Law, which is awaiting approval from the House of Representatives, as it has not achieved the quorum for two consecutive sessions, in an attempt by some forces to prevent the law from passing.”
