Israeli media revealed today (Tuesday) the arrest of a woman suspected of communicating with others to target Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that the police and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) arrested a woman from central Israel, after suspecting her of communicating with others with the aim of targeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, explaining that the woman planned to carry out the attack using an explosive device.
The police stated that the Shin Bet is conducting the investigation with the woman, and she will be charged with conspiracy to commit a terrorist act, while Israeli media reported that the woman is 70 years old and had planned to assassinate Netanyahu using a rocket launcher.
The Israeli channel "i24 News" clarified that the suspect is an activist against the Israeli government from Tel Aviv, and she was arrested weeks ago, with the news being published today after the lifting of the ban on the details of the investigation.
The channel quoted the police as saying: "During the investigation, suspicions arose against a woman in her seventies, an activist against the government, residing in Tel Aviv, who expressed to others her intention to assassinate the Prime Minister," indicating that she communicated with other activists to obtain weapons and inquired about the security arrangements concerning the Prime Minister.
The channel mentioned that the investigation began about two months ago after activists reported to the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) that the woman had stated in front of them that she wanted to "kill" Netanyahu and had attempted to obtain weapons, including, according to suspicions, an RPG rocket launcher.
In a comment on the news of the woman's arrest, opposition leader Yair Lapid strongly condemned the attempt to harm Prime Minister Netanyahu, stating that anyone who has tried or may try to harm him must be brought to justice with the utmost severity.
