The German Foreign Minister, Johan Wadephol, emphasized that Syria should not become a battleground for regional tensions. In a statement today (Thursday), he called on all local and international actors to refrain from anything that jeopardizes stability and the political transition process in Syria."
Israel launched strong airstrikes on Damascus yesterday (Wednesday), targeting the Ministry of Defense headquarters and areas near the presidential palace in the Syrian capital following a surge in violence in the southern province of Sweida.
Syria confirmed that the Israeli strikes were a "flagrant violation" of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law, calling on the Security Council to intervene urgently to put an end to these violations.
Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department urged Syrian government forces to withdraw from the conflict zone in southern Syria to reduce tensions, after Israel carried out a series of strikes on the General Staff headquarters in Damascus, the vicinity of the presidential palace, and other military targets in southern Syria, warning Damascus against harming the Druze.
Clashes in Sweida have erupted since July 13 between armed groups and government-aligned Bedouin tribes, resulting in the deaths of hundreds, including civilians and military personnel, as government forces launched a campaign to take control of the city.
In response, Israel retaliated through its air force by targeting Syrian forces in Daraa and Damascus.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that an agreement had been reached to cease fire in Sweida, consisting of 14 points, the most significant of which stipulates an immediate halt to all military operations and the formation of a monitoring committee from the Syrian state and Druze elders to oversee the implementation process.
